Need to upgrade.... hows this? ( 2 Views )
-
Right now Im running w/ a Abit IC-7 mobo, with a 2.4c processor. I also have a Chaintech 5900FX video card. I have 2gb of ram and a couple of HDDs.
What I want to do is upgrade the above listed components with the following:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2000MHz
eVGA 256-P2-N563-AX Geforce 7900GT CO
Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP 20.1-inch
My budget is about 1,000. Anyone see anything I should change or modify? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I dont want to go all out with the newest hardware, just something I will notice from my current setup for gaming, photo editing.)

Perhaps you might look into other 20" WS LCD displays. Also, S939 is at a dead end now, although that's not really a big deal if you upgrade your motherboard and memory along with your CPU.

Well, for sure you shouldn't buy an AMD proc now. Get a lower end Core 2 Duo (which will outperform the X2 3800+ stock for stock easily, and can OC to rival or beat an FX chip with decent air cooling), some DDR2, your graphics card is already PCI-E so that can carry over, so you just need a new processor, RAM, and Mobo.

I hear this display is top notch. You got something better for that price range (300-400)?

Yes, I've been reading up on the core 2 duos. You recommend a mobo for that?

It depends on how long your new upgrade is going to last you.
What you have planned is good and may last a good long time. Wait until next week before you make any decisions as AMD is planning a big price drop. You will be able to get a new AM2 dual core for about 230 dollars.
The AM2 cores support DDR2 memory, the MB would have to be an ASUS M2N which would be either 150 or 200 dollars depending on the chipset, but would be a great choice for SLI or the new DX10 cards when they arrive.
Its too bad but the S939s are going to go the way of the dinosaur.

Obviously good advice, and youre suggesting that the AM2 dual core, i.e AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2000MHz OR AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800. For the price, which one would be worth it?
Would this out perform a lower end conroe?

Looks okay to me but I would go Conroe or AM2 at this point.

Thanks- I think I need to wait until next week, shop around...
Im just curious as to the significance in performance/price ratio between them.

Since you have to upgrade your RAM to DDR2 and your video card to PCIe either way, go for Core 2. Even after the AMD price cuts, Core 2 will still perform better for the price. The price will be the same either way, since you must buy a CPU, motherboard, RAM, and video card either way. The choice is obvious: Core 2 will be ~$30 more, run WAAAY faster at stock, and overclock much better than the X2.

Good deal-
Core 2 duo
7900 eVGA vid card
Mobo--????
DDR2 ram ( CORSAIR XMS2 2GB )
and a monitor yet to be determined.
