Cheapest VidCard to play CS1.6 w/100fps? ( 1 Views )
-
all i play is cs1.6 and want 100fps constantly. its a budget system.
is there a cheap card thatll achieve this for me?
(özgür, Turkey)
There are very cheap x800XL's around right now, if you get a CPU that can power it, you should be great.
(ilknur, Saint Pierre and Miquelon)
an x800xl won't hold a constant 100fps in CSS
Oh wait.. you're talking about the original CS>??
Hmmm no idea.
(MEMUR_32_M, Saint Lucia)
forgot to mention has to be pcie
(niyazi hakan, Senegal)
An x700pro/xt should work just fine

yeah just cs 1.6. not source
(filiz, Netherlands Antilles)
Honestly I don't think it's going to take a whole lot...less than an x800xl for sure

(ilker, Norway)
Instead of spending ~$60, wouldn't you rather spend $40 more so you can get a card that will play newer games when you finally decide you want to move on from 1.6?

jesus my Voodoo 3 got 100 FPS in CS 1.6.... its QUAKE 2 ENGINE!
anything more than a raadeon 9600 would be overkill. :rolls eyes:
(büşra, Barbados)
a ti4400 would do it nicely, they go on forums for like $40, shoo even my 8500 held 100fps in cs easily :p

Its actually modified Quake engine... unless they adopted Quake 2 at some point after it came out (which I'm almost positive they didn't)

just modify your microwave ;).
(yiğit, Gambia)
no its quake 2. do you remember what the original quake looked like? trust me. its quake 2.. i should know.
(merve, Nepal)
I'm pretty sure you can get CS 1.6 to run on one of those Ti-89 calculators...its quite easy on system resources :p

hahaha QFT.
but OP you gotta answer a few questions. what resolution do you want? if your cal-i and can pull freakin "Kim of 3D" shots down mid in dust 2 those extra few pixels help. i have a 6600GT at 1600X1200. fps drops occasionally (like mid 40s), but 40s is fine. considering i have a monitor refreash rate of 60Hz up there its ok.
are you AGP or PCI-e. someone other then OP said PCI-e but is that you or is he referring to something else?

There was a deal on Geek.com for a brand new X600XT (same as 9600XT) that was only $40, maybe you should visit their site and look around.
NVM, here it is http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...XTG-C3&cat=VCD
OOS right now, but very good price if you can wait a bit.

I struggled trying to find a card that would give me 100fps and not die in smoke. Eventually I settled for a 6600gt for $70 from someone on AT. It works perfectly and turned out to be exactly what I needed.

No, it's not. Half-Life used a heavily modified Quake Engine. I sat in between the guy who wrote the Quake network code and the guy who ported Quake to Solaris sparc, so I should know :p

well, i have a ati x850xt 256mb in my current rig...but thats gonna go into my conroe ima build later. so i want a mediocre card to go in my current rig once i upgrade.
(emine, Montserrat)
I am selling a X800 GTO2 PCIE flashed to 16 pipelines with AC5 Rev 2 that gets my 100 FPS IN CS Solid, and I get about 80 FPS IN 5 + smokes.
Letting it go for 140 shipped.

If you're getting conroe... might as well get a video card that matches the processor.

Why are you guys bashing on 1.6, it is 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000 times better than CS:Source
and my 6800 unlocked/overclocked can drop to 30-40fps with 5+ smokes @ 1024x768 4xaa 16xaf in 1.6

I only meant that if you're going to spend the time and effort to get a top notch system... might as well get a brand new video card. x850 xt was top notch 3 years ago (or was it 2?)
(dnz , Oman)
I think that you should go for the 7600gt, you can get them for ~$130 on newegg after MIR. I suggest this card cause...
1. It is a hell of a lot of card for the money
2. It will smoke 1.6 (beats x850xt also)
3. I said the same thing 2 months ago, "source sucks, im sticking with 1.6" Here i am 2 months later playin about 4 or 5 hours a day on source :):)
4. Its good enough for other games too, so you might not need to upgrade as fast
5. To me, getting a "hold over" card is stupid, and a waste of money.

1.6 graphically was made BEFORE graphics cards were introduced. As far as I can remember, it took a whopping 16megs of video ram to play it. Heres the min specs..
- Pentium 100
+ MMX processor
- 16 MB RAM
- CD-ROM Drive
- SVGA graphics adapter
- Windows supported sound card
+ OpenGL supporting 3D accelerator
I mean, any game that recommends "mmx" will be absolutly slaughtered with any new generation gpu.. even onboard. If you are really worried, you could always go with a x1600pro (usually run for around $100 pci-e on the egg).. but anything more would be abso-lute overkill... As is, if you have onboard with 64mb shared video, you should be able to pull +100fps.
(melike, Israel)
An onboard videocard is not enough...
Any newer mainstream card will do fine. Or a newer gpu than 9700/9800 series cards.
CS is also usually more cpu than gpu dependant. People like to play at 800 and 1024 resolutions : )
I'd recommend a 6600GT, or then a 7600GT if you got the money. Then you would also have a nice card for other games.

source pwns. its just faster kills. one of those massive russian 2.5 inch bullets from an ak would peirce any body armor and kill the target. they just made it more like that in source. 2 shots to the chest with an AK kills. where as in 1.6 it depends on your range, and usually takes 3 or 4
Source Physics also pwn every other physics system out there (yes Ageia im talking to you).
and the graphics are better. have you seen the new inferno? ooommmg. thats unbelieveable.

A 7900GT or X1800XT should provide you with 100FPS under ANY circumstances in CS 1.6 =D altho its expensive.
How about considering a 7600GT?

My 9700 non-pro gave me a constant 100FPS under any circumstances on my P4 2.4GHz with RDRAM. 7600gt is a bit overkill.

in CS 1.6, the CPU probably matters more than the gfx card.
