Network Ghosting Applications? ( 1 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Is there anything besides Norton Ghost Corp that will let you do network ghost casting? I.E. have an image stored on a file server and ghost it to client PCs, and be able to save images from a client PC and store it on a server.

  2. Youll need Ghost to restore GHO images, but maybe use bartPE for aBootable CD/DVD/Usb drive with networking (and a nice GUI)

  3. No, I mean is there something besides Ghost that can be used. Some other program from another developer with the same functionality as Ghost.

  4. Zenworks

  5. Acronis TrueImage works pretty well, if you want to spend some money. Linux is a potentially better option if you have some command line skills.

  6. You can also use a MS RIS server with server 2k3 or even 2k and EMboot to create a bootable ghost floppy image that will work with the RIS server. Thats what I use at work and have for about 2 years now, works like a charm every day!

  7. Any reason for not using ghost?

    Plus one.

I personally never use Norton's products because of this issue. I have found a few Ghost replacements, but nothing that will do Ghostcasting. Although, MIS might somewhat do what you are looking for.

  12. I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but I've used G4U a few times with good results. It is an open source project and will image a drive or parition to an FTP server. You can then copy it back over the network. All done by booting up to a BSD program I think.

It does have its drawback though - mainly it is slow. Since it does a copy of the drive, it will copy junk data as well. I've had good luck using a program that will "blank out" the unused space on the drive right before cloing to keep the image size small. I think you can download that from the G4U page as well.

  13. landesk will use ghost image's.

  14. Have you peeked?

There's several versions of True Image..plus their Snap Deploy line.

  15. at my old job we had altiris. it was pretty expensive though. if i remember correctly it was 12,000$. but it is very nice.

you get the full version for 30 days last i checked.

  16. Well the majority of the players in that space have been named, but for clarity.

    Norton Ghost
    Acronis True Image Enterprise Server

    Novell ZenWorks
    Altiris
Microsoft RIS and SMS Server 2003

The reason for the gap is that the other products are not specific to just imaging and application deployment. They do much more than that (and cost more accordingly)
