My Quest on Getting Titan Quest to Run 'Good'

Ironically enough, I think attempting to get Iron Lore and THQ's game Titan Quest to run fine has been more so of a quest as opposed to playing it.

However, before I begin ranting and raving negatively, I will personally congratulate anyone who has took part in developing and publishing Titan Quest. I have lived with only 3 females, all my life, and I've bared with it nicely. But when it comes to simply trying to get your game to run decently on my computer, I go nuts. Yeah, 'gg iron lore, you beat me in the game of keeping sane. Too bad your skills couldn't be used in other activities, suich as developing video-games.'

So as I had mentioned before, concerning this 'quest' of mine, on getting this game to run fine. My PC specs are as follows:
+ Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU s478 533MHz (Attempted TQ with no OCing, and OCing at 3.1GHz)
+ BFG 6600 GT OC AGP8x/128MB (Attempted TQ with no OCing, and OCing at 600MHz/1.21GHz)
    - Tried TQ with 84.21 ForceWare drivers and 91.34 ForceWare drivers
    - Tried TQ with and without using CoolBits
    + ASUS P4P800SE
    + 2x512MB OCz Premiere DDR400 Dual-Channled
    + 120GB Western-Digital IDE 8MB 7200RPM HDD

And here are a few other things I'd like to point:
    + Viruses/Spyware are not a factor
+ Do not use active virus guard
    + Idle with 20 Processes
+ Overheating is not an issue
    + I defrag often
    + I format bi-monthly
    + I've used GameXP
    + I've followed many Windows XP tweak-guides
+ I've optimized my desktop so Performance > Appearance
+ My desktop resolution is at 1152x864
    + I score 3650 on 3DMark05
+ Never have problems with any other games

    + Titan Quest CD-ROM Version
    - Tried with both retail and 1.08 patch

Now that you know a little bit about my computer and it's settings, I will get to the point of this whole thread.

Why the f*ck does this game run so shitty?
I'm no fan of THQ games, and I've never heard of Iron Lore. The reason I bought Titan Quest was simply because it's pretty much a Diablo clone, and I am a dedicated Diablo fan. I initially heard about your game through a advertisement in PC Gamer magazine, didn't really pay attention to it. However, when I had next logged onto [H]ard|Forum, everyone was reccomending to try out the Titan Quest demo. Being the trend-whore I am, I gave it a shot. It ran not too bad, graphics were nice, and it was exactly like Diablo, how excited I was for the game to be fully release.

On release date, I ran to Wal-Mart (literally) and picked the game up for $39.99 (Canadian funds.) Now, usually when I pay for something, I expect the least bit of satisfaction. If satisfaction isn't met, you naturally get upset. Just like if I was to pay a Thai prostitute to suck my knob, and she refuses. I pop a cap in her ass. In regards to Titan Quest satisfying me... it failed miserably. The game runs at real jumpy FPS (frames per second), and during random times, the game will just run at 10 - 20 FPS for 15 seconds are so... I then played around with the in-game settings, and notied that no matter what in-game settings the game was at, low or high detail, it ran the same. So I came to TitanQuest.net to see if anyone else was experiencing this strange problems... there sure was alot of problems, however, couldn't find any identical to mine. So I stayed calm for a few more days until the 1.08 patch would be released... nothing changed for me. Same sh*tty performance, regardless of what settings I had applied.

Really the point of this thread is for responses, by fellow TQ'ers and the game developers to my most pondered question... how can I get this game to run decently?

    Sincerely, Karant

  2. One word: SecuROM.

    (gokhan, Mali)

  3. It runs really smooth on my PC.

    Here's my specs.

    Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz
    2mb memory
    7900GTX
Running at 1680x1050 with everthing on.

Runs as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Why are so many people complaining?

    (merve, Saint Pierre and Miquelon)

  4. I'm actually playing with a Ti4200 LOL, and it actually runs smooth except for forest areas. Although it's running at low settings, it's almost like if it runs better then when I was playing with my 6800GT before it fried.

Hmm... I'm surprised your computer works at all with only 2mb of memory...

So what are you doing differently than myself & the OP? The game runs like ass, even worse post-patch. It's so aggrivating I've completely stopped playing after playing 30+ hours after the release. I don't have problems with *any* other game or program.

    (ali, United Kingdom)

  9. i maxed out the demo w/ aa/af and it ran smooth as butter for me as well :)

    (nurgül, Barbados)

  10. I dunno man, but it works just fine on my PC.

    I'm even running with FSAA.

    I have 2gb of memory - not 2mb.

I don't understand why so many are complaining about the performance.

  11. Game crashes like woah on my PC... I get one every wha, 30 minutes maybe.
Even after the patch, stupid game companies like these guys and BF2's, all fools that like to release buggy games.

  13. Issue I have experienced is mainly crashing; It does it about every 10 minutes, rendering the game unplayable.

I have tried disabling hardware acceleration of my Realtek audio, as well as forcing it to run on 1 core, neither of which made much difference. The patch hasn't made a scratch of difference (although it did re-enable a corrupt char I had).

Seriously about the buggiest game I have ever bought. Don't think I will play it again until THQ and Iron Lore work out wtf is going on. Major dissatisfaction.

  14. mine locked up every ten-20 minutes too when I first started playing
i thought it was heat related.

    IT WAS.

and not my overclocked proc either...this is the first game I've had that works the GPU out so hard it hits the levels of heat that lock up the PC. I upgraded to the newest nvidia drivers at 9x series and that helped the fram rates, but NOT the lock ups. My nvidia card showed nearly 100* C when I alt tabbed out and opened the Nvida control panel. I got a video card cooler fan and problem solved, - no more lockup.

I know this game is video card intense because i thought at first it was my proc. So i underclocked my 3.2GHz P4 northwood to 1.6Ghz and the game still locked up in about the same timeframe (believe it or not it didn't run that much worse at 1.6 compared to 3.2----that should tell you how incredibly video card related this game is) Anyway, When I put a fan on the video card it never locked up again. Now i'm happily back overclocked to 3.6GHz on my proc and stock settings on my 6800GT and I just got done with a four hour session with no lockups, as compared to every 15 minutes before.

  15. Wish it was something as simple as heat. My system has ALOT of air cooling and my XT tends to stay below 75C. Problem seems to be sound related as it happens only when new sound events are kicked off (ie talking, teleporting, dropping items, purchasing items etc etc etc).

    (serdar, Belize)

  16. I'm getting the same symptoms. Me and my friends were planning on lanning through the game but that couldn't happen, as soon as a player joined the game, someone crashed.

    (ümit, United States)

  17. Well, the 6600GT isn't the best card out there by a longshot...
...not to mention your rest of your specs aren't all that, either.

I know Titan Quest may not look like the most graphics intensive game, but believe me when I say it is. Even I lagged to like 20FPS at some points. :o

  20. No problems here, everything maxed out at 1280x1024 (eventually will be running 1920x1200). No crashes either. A combination of generally good luck with PC gaming and quality parts (good PSU, good mobo, good RAM) = no problems whatsoever with any game I've tried, including Titan Quest.

Fun game by the way; I just got it this weekend and am working on exploiting the whole "save->quit->load->loot a couple of chests->save->quit->..." thing :) I already have two epics that are usuable for my level 8 warrior.

  21. from what ive gathered, system performance on this game is very 'hit or miss'

there are guys out there running SLi setups with FX-60's who's performance at the same settings is worse than those with much cheaper rigs.

for me personally (specs in sig) im running it well on a 2405 dell moniter with my card at 1600 16:10 widescreen aspect. i definately experience some hitches during gameplay however there are few times where it has become unbearable.

what you need to determine is if the hitches of this "work in progress" game is worth it for the gameplay right now. if its not, pick something else up. for a lot of people ive talked to in game, they dont mind dealing with a few hiccups for what they are getting out of the game.

    choice is yours!

  22. The game has been *entirely* bug-free for me. I am nearly 20 hrs into it. I have played many online games, and there is always the occasional "connection lost," but I get that in every online game at one point.

Any problems encountered are likely to be associated with your own hardware/software arrangements.

    (ygt, American Samoa)

  23. The patch has removed my crashes. No more bluescreens and no CTDs. It did mess up background music, though. As in other games, I think some of the crashes are from trying to load new music at transitions.

    I'm using x-fi, btw.

You might have a point if, in my example, I had a single problem with any other piece of software I use. I get stellar performance in everything I run save TQ. You're lucky, I'm not. There is nothing constructive about posting in "I'm having a problem" threads with your glib pronouncements on other person's setups.

The demo worked fine. It didn't have SecuROM.

  26. Have you installed the 1.08 patch for Titan Quest? It just came out on the 7th. It fixed a number of problems people were having.. but its by no means a final patch.

The game has been running great for me. In the 60+ hours of play ive gotten in on it so far, ive crashed once to desktop. That was pre-patch. After patch I have about 20+ hours of play, no crashes yet.

Some people experience issues using Ventrilo / Teamspeak along with Titan Quest.

So far im loving the game. I havent had a chance to try multiplayer over the internet since the patch, it was really bad before. LAN this weekend was excellent. Ill find out in the next few days if Internet play has been fixed at all.

  27. i had the sound based crashing too, enabling win98/ME compatability mode on "titan quest.exe" seems to solve this problem...

    (sadıye, Armenia)

  28. Thanks Denki I will give it a go :)

    (cansu, Montserrat)

  29. when i try to start up my copy it tells me the graphics engine will not initialize.. or something to that effect?

    i have a 6800GS.. wth?

    (HÜSEYİN, Belarus)

  30. I wonder if Vsync is causing problems for people. I have started to notice that the game does lag a lot with vsync. I turn vsync off and it's pretty smooth, but I get graphics tearing. I'm playing around with triple buffering as suggested in another thread but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

    (adem , Angola)

  31. My game just straight up crashes to desktop, no chance for me ;)

    (savaş, Anguilla)

  32. I gained a good boost of performance by running TQ in low priority mode. Set it to low priority in the task manager. It gave me about 10 fps more. Not sure why this works but it does.

As for the original poster, I been keeping up with everything TQ and there is a performance issue with this game and the GF 6600's.

    (beyza, Venezuela)

  33. the game consistantly locks up on my 6800gs.

it takes it a few minutes though, and believe it may be heat related.

    (öykü, Vanuatu)

  34. As for the crashes related to sound, I believe there is an issue with AMD's cool and quiet that conflicts with the game. There is a patch on the AMD site for it.

I believe the game also conflicts with certain third party mouse drivrs. You might try the default windows mouse driver to see if that helps.

Other than that,I imagine the majority of the crashes has to do with hardware. This game really cranks the heat out in my system and I had to get a new CPU heatsink as a result. Now no crashes after days of playing heavily.

    (yasemin, Timor-Leste)

  35. FYI, Netplay is by no means fixed.. still get random disconnects. But.. Lan play is fine.. so we have been using Hamachi so we can LAN over Internet. Kinda sad when you have to use a third party program to be able to play well. If anyone wants that program.. it is basically a VPN client so you can LAN games over the internet. You can grab it here for free http://www.hamachi.cc/

    (murat, Virgin Islands, British)

  36. i have confirmed that i do have instability within windows.. linux seems to run fine. (not the game within linux, just linux itself) im gonna do a format tonight and see how that turns out.
