Page fault error ( 4 Views )

no kitty!
  1. This is a good one, hopefully someone can help me out.

My mother's computer is one i built. Specs:

    AMD 2800+64bit 754
MSI K8V800 (think that's the model number, its the microATX)
some older corsair ram (256) and old samsung (256) = 512
    older Maxtor HDD IDE
    CD Burner
    Thermaltake 430w PSU (new)
    D-Link Wireless Network card
    Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

That's everything that's in there. The computer will reboot at random while your doing stuff. Sometimes the screen will go blank (amber light) and you can't get it to come back up unless you power it off and back on. Windows was giving me a BSoD of PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA.

My first thought was ram, so I ran memtest. As soon as memtest fires up it reboots and this is an endless cycle. I swap out ram with stuff I know works. It still reboots at the start of memtest. So ram is good.

Next up was PSU, even though it was new. Swapped it out with a 400w... same problem. memtest reboots automtically.

Next step was to see if the CD with memtest on it was still good. Put it in the laptop I had handy and memtest ran just fine.

I got another motherboard, the exact same model. Hooked it up, ran memtest... instant reboot. So at this point I'm thinking her computer doesn't like memtest. I boot into windows and try another test... Prime95.

If anything can kill a machine its Prime95. It ran for 3 hours with no errors. Perfect, I fixed it and memtest is just gay.

The next day it is randomly rebooting in windows again and shutting the screen down like it was before... GRRRRRRRR. I know the memory controller for the 64 bit setup is on the processors, so I got a 754 2600+ Sempron that was new and put it in. GUESS WHAT??? Still reboots.

I tried unplugging the HDD and running memtest, no go, still reboots. The only part left for me to change out is the CD-Rom drive lol, and I don't think that's causing the reboots in windows, maybe the memtest thing.

All this was tried with the PCI cards unplugged (ie- wireless card and sound card) so those didn't conflict. WTF is wrong with this machine?

the problems in windows happened when i had the wireless card plugged in, cause I wanted to test the internet. Could that idiot card be causing the crazy reboots and the screen to just stop? That still wouldn't explain memtest not running, as the wireless card wasn't in there during that test.

Note: All the temps are in the green.

    It boggles the mind.

EDIT: oh, what about a grounding issue? I just thought about that. Possible that something is shorting out? I'm grabbing at straws now.

  2. What are your memory timings in the BIOS while doing these tests? Have you tried adjusting them (making them more relaxed)?

  3. Well, This computer has been running fine for a long time. So I haven't done anything with the timings, but it is worth looking at. I'll have to try that and let you know.
