antec smart power 500 watt PSU. the 7950gx2 says minimum 28 apms. the smart power states 36 amps combined dual rails. does the minimum 28 amps have to come from one rail or can u combine???

Just hang on for a couple months dude. Thermaltake is coming out with a 1200 watt PSU. That should take care of all your needs for the foreseeable future.
EDIT: In fact, they already have 800 and 1000 PSUs available right now.

Thermaltake ????
Yuck!
Enermax
PC Power & Cooling
OCZ Modstream/Powerstream/Gamestream
Those would be the only power supplies I would buy.

QFT.
Btw, i had the same issue with my X1900XT. See, they don't mean your Videocard needs that amps alone, they mean your system COMBINED needs those amps. If you have dual rails, then one rail feeds the processor, the other feeds your devices. If you have a dedicated 6 pin PCI-E connector, it's independent from the dual rails anyways.
Check out my thread in the PSU section here where i asked basically the same thing.

What about Antec? they have kick ass PS's

Tagan power supplies are another good option. The TG900-U95 (900 Watt) and TG1100-U95 (1100 Watt) models are built for Quad SLI systems.

With just ONE 7950GX2, you will probably be ok. These are actually farily low power drain cards compared to the rest of the high end. In fact, one review site www.hardwarezone.com was able to get the 7950GX2 in QUAD-SLI to run on like a 480W PSU, which is rather suprising. Not that I would do that, but a good 600 SLI certified PSU would probably do the jon fine for most people.

The 7950 GX2 uses less power under load then a single ATI X1900 XTX so if your power supply can handle a single X1900 XTX then it can handle a 7950 GX2.
