HL2 hitching really bad ( 2 Views )
-
I have recently been playing through the game again and the game hitches really bad I am using the rig in my sig and I am playing at 1280/768 with everything maxed except for water reflection its set at reflect world also I have 4x aa and 4x af turned on. I know its not lag because the canal level runs great except for when it hitches. So any suggestions I was thinking about setting my aperture size to 256mbs it was set on 128mbs. Also what is Color Correction I have never saw this option the last time I played.

you can't have everything maxed out with a 9800pro, the vid card is the problem.

More system ram my help, you can also try defraging your hard drive. The source engine is a fickle one, for some it runs great and for others it never runs well.

yeah, you're trying to get far too much out of that 9800Pro

Well I mean it always runs smooth but every once in a while it just freezes and goes back to normal I have tried reducing graphic settings and it doesn't have any effect, and shouldn't a gig of ram be enough

Yes, a gig of ram is more than enough for HL2. You might want to reinstall Steam, sometimes it likes to screw around with all of your Source games.

Turn down/off AA. That will help your performance. Also, running DirectX 8.1 would help.

128Megs of AGP aperture should be optimal, but trying 256, 64 or 32 won't hurt. I would try disabling fast writes and VSync, upping the AGP voltage if possible (1.6 or 1.7v, even 1.8v won't hurt anything), setting heapsize to 512Megs or more, and last but not least, this (which includes jacking up the heapsize).

I think this is more of a bug than a performance issue... It's been seen on some pretty high-end systems, and doesn't seem to be affected much by lowering your settings. HL2 actually ran smoother on my old XP1800+ / Ti4400 than it does on my A64 3000+ / X800.
Last I heard there was still no solution, and I think everyone's given up on Valve's promised fix...

they had an update a few weeks ago that fixed the stutter crap for a lot of people including me. unfortunately that update actually gave the stutter to some people that didnt have it.

I fixed it, I just defraged the HDD, set the apertur size to 256mbs and uped my heapsize to 348.

glad that fixed it for you. those things didnt make any difference when i had the problem. why dont you turn the AA down to 2 and up the AF to 8 or 16. the game will look a lot better with more AF plus it doesnt take as much of a performance hit as AA.

Jaggies make me sick and the 4xAF is fine for me I have played with 8xAF is fine but it slows down at times

Just upgraded my 9800pro to x800 pro on my 2500xp and i must the difference is chocolate and shit. I could finally play without all those spikes and lag you mentioned. There is so much we can do with 9800pro and i think its now at its limit. As soon as i played the lost coast demo, i had to find a new card since i was going well below 10-15 frames on that.
