Cisco 2900 - how do I shut off ports? ( 2 Views )
-
I have a Cisco 2900 that was given to me. Ports 5-8 are bad and, and the link light is solid amber all the time.
Is there a way to disable these ports and turn the lights off?? I am tired of looking at them!

It's either going to be:
set port disable 1/5
set port disable 1/6
etc...
or
interface fa0/5
shutdown
interface fa0/6
shutdown
You can try a 'show ports' or 'show interfaces status' to see how the ports are named, so you'll know how to type the interface names in the commands above..

Of course you need to be in config mode before shutting down interfaces.

Yeah, go to the interface itself and shut it down...
If you are not too familiar with how to go about it...here is the walkthrough
router> enable (enables a person to privilaged mode)
router# config t (enables a person to global configuration mode)
router(config)# int fa0/5 (enables a person to enter interface mode with fast ethernet card 0, port 5 as the interface)
router(config-if)# shutdown (obviously, the shutdown command)
Then all you gotta do after you submit the shutdown command is to type int fa0/6, hit enter and then give the shutdown command again to shutdown port 6. Then on to the next interface...
