Oblivion upgrade from 3700 San Diego to Opteron 165: Worth it? ( 2 Views )
-
I just sold my trusty AMD 64 3700 San Diego core on Ebay and bought a dual core Opteron 165 which can overclock like a beast.
Unfortuntaely I have been reading that dual CPUs actually are slower for todays games. This cant be right or can it? How about Oblvion? Will I see an increase in performance?
I have 2GB of memory and an x1900xt video card.
This is about a $150 price difference and I am hoping there will be some performance increase. Especially because Oblivion is so CPU bound.

If you can OC your 165 to the same speed your 3700+ was running at, you wouldn't see any difference and framerates.
But you would be able to multitask better. Not that it really matters with Oblivion, since ALT+TABing seems to break the game. :(
I sold my 3700+ for a 165 as well. The Sandy was running at 2.7GHz but my 165 is only running at 2.52GHz. Still, I'm happy! I doubt I'd notice any difference with such close clocks anyways, and even so, it'd probably be all in synthetic benchies.

Basically my San Diego 3700 ran at 2.5
If I overclock my Opteron to 2.5 wouldn't that be better performance because its a dual core?

Absolutely at least a little boost. Try the tweaks for multi core cpus at tweakguides. The game is supposed to be multithreaded. You should see a boost in this game. Some were saying it wasn't helping much but then try the tweaks.
I believe in some of the tweaks. I set a few based on memory and preloading and it seemed to make a difference. It would seem messing with this stuff can pay off. Maybe time optimizing for 360 caused it? I don't know. I just flipped some toggles based on using more of my 2 damn gigs, and it seems to help.

im playing the game very well on my 9800pro if that tells you anything. 1280x1024, medium texture setting, grass distance maxed, most others at halfway. Only thing that really seems to be holding me back is the 128mb of ram on my video card and im missing out on HRD. Ill try to get some processor usage graphs later but from what ive seen hitting crtl alt delete, one core is usually at about 60-70%, the other at 25-30%
