This afternoon, my big UPS died. Twice. It randomly shut down, takign all my eqipment with it. I booted up again, only to have to die a few minutes later. Giving up on it, I moved all my stuff over to my much small POS ups (just as a surge protector), and fired everythign up again. It now seems to be going fine, but my display is doing a strange thing. It looks like horizontal taring, but it does it with static images (symptooms observed from explorer). Random sections of the screen will "shift" sort of. Happens so fast I can't really tell what is happening, but it is very noticable, and my first impression was that of tearing. So, is it possibel that when my UPS (an
APC Smart UPS 1000 with no known problems besides a dead battery) died, it killed either my mnitor (a 19inch Sony/Dell Trinition CRT) or my video card and perhpas other components? Or could it be that in the switch of UPSs, I am now running the cable carrying current to all of my comps (3, plus my monitor) too close to the analog siganl cable and it is causing interference? I have tried moving the cable to no avail, though they atill are within 3 inches of each other. GPU temp is fine, 43C in a 35C environment. NICs on 2 of my machiens appear to be fine, over 7GB have passed MD5. About to try reinstallign graphics drivers.
Colors in the torn section remain accurate. Card does not appear to be displaying any artifacts in explorer.
EDIT: I have been informed by the APC rep that the cause of this problem is likley a dead battery, and that the UPS does not send any harmful current/voltage to it's lines when it dies in the fasion that it did.
