intel D proc? ( 4 Views )
-
so I am wondering how would a Intel Pentium D 920 LGA775 2.8GHz 2MB (per core) 800 FSB Dual-Core proc compare to a X2 3800+ .
I'll be upgrading my current HTPC and thinking of going intel...
The HTPC will be used exclusively for DVDs using heavy ffdshow on a NEC 50" 50XR5 plasma.
any thoughts?
:)
Thank you.

Heavy ffdshow... for a HTPC I would have tried this new Yonah (Core Duo/Solo mobile CPUs) motherboard from Aopen, i975Xa-YDG.
http://club.aopen.com.tw/news/News_S...nguage=English
Key Features:
Support 667MHz FSB Intel® Core™ Duo/Core™ Solo Socket 479 CPU
Supports DDR2 667
Power Master
Gigabit LAN on-board
7.1 Channel
Support 2 slot PCI Express x16 Graphics, ATI Crossfire mode
Supports PCI Express x16 Graphics
IEEE 1394 on-board
IR Remote Control and Receiver
Hardware Monitoring
Chassis Intrusion Detector
1MHz Stepping CPU Overclocking

wow...Thank you for that! .didn`t know the existance of that motherboard...
who resells it? :)

...found it on Newegg for $298
wow...wondering if its worth that much....

No, don't bother with spending too much on the processor. You're just watching movies, go with what's cheap - the 920D you suggested or I would even suggest the 805D budget processor.

I agree...I'm mostly AMD based..but Windows MCE does ffdshow vids just fine on my 2500+...and that only runs at 1.8GHz

Yes the D 805 is excellent value for the money, but I understand that you want to max out CPU load by post-processing/upscaling with ffdshow. Yonahs are fast and may even be run with passive cooling, so if noise is an issue you'll have to weigh the extra cost of a silent Yonah system against the extra noise (or expensive water cooling system) of a Smithfield/Presler system (D8xx/D9xx).

well, price is not really an issue: I spent $5000 for the plasma and wall mounting it, so I'd like to have an HTPC that will serve me well....
I am using a 2500+ right now an my exisiting HTPC and I cannot do resize x2 with Lanczos 4 and De-noise togheter. I have stuttering right there....
NOISE is very important, as it is how hot it runs, since the HTPC will be stored in a Salamander Design Synergy 30 cabinet with mesh grilles sides and door. So it should run as cool and as silently possible!

Well, given your specs, I would definetely suggest either the Intel 930D, or the AMD 4200+ for the same money. Both are excellent processors and run cool. Some of the higher-end AMD's will be faster than the Intel's, but if it runs what you want then you might as well go with whatever brand suits you.

will look into those two proc right now InorganicMatter, thank you :)

forgot to say that I'd like to keep it in a u-ATX board....

With respective TDPs of 95W and 110W neither the 930D nor the X2 4200+ will run very cool in a cabinet with limited airflow, unless watercooling is used. The TDP of the Core Duos is 31W (15W for the LV models), less than a third of the TDP for 930D. This could make a difference, eg between a "quiet" and a "silent" system.

good infos there jon, thank you. :)
31Wis incredibly low!!

If you have to go Intel then the only ones worth a damn are Cedar Mill chips or P-M (Core Duo chips too), everything else just isn't worth it when you add in the expense of having to cool it and the noise level you'll have to deal with.

Maybe it's just me but I hate Lanczos 4, too much damn "ringing" and other image quality issues. The perferred method (atleast it's what seems to be suggested more often) is to use Lanczos 2, looks damn good on my 2.2 AXP with alittle resize (multiply by 1.75) and 3dnoise (1.17, 2.63, 1.17, HQ) going.

...Crim, I dont have to go Intel....was interested in the procs since I read reviews of the Yonah and was surprised about how good they are.
Just want a proc that maybe I can cool passively or silently with a fan and will provide some ffdshow goodness...
:)
EDIT: Well the Lanczos 4 option is part of LimitedSharpen dll. Way way better than normally using Resizing....

If money is no object, try looking up an Opteron HE which have a 55W TDP. I think they're socket 940 only, which will require registered ram, but dual core 2.2 ghz @ 55W (Opteron 275) is pretty damn good in my book. Coupled with a Scythe Ninja, it might be able to run passively.with a bit of airflow through the case.
