Opentype fonts ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Does anyone know if any languages support printing text using an opentype font with a postscript outline?

I've tried in Java, but can't get it to work, and haven't seen anything saying other languages can support it. Basically I need to print a parking permit with different fonts depending on what type of permit it is and the type of fonts we use are OpenType.

Thanks for any info in advance and we can pretty much use any language that can be called by a web browser and can accept values passed into it (ie I passed in variables to a Java applet to try Java).

  2. Instead of trying to write the document engine yourself, why not find an application (can you get LaTeX to handle OpenType?) that handles your document layout and feed your data to it (or script the App or extend it or...)? I'd think that having to handle document layout, font metrics and the like in your own code would be something best avoided unless it's absolutely necessary.

As for languages supporting it, since it's an open spec, you could potentially support it with any language. It might not be 'out of the box' support, but it could be done. If you're looking for a platform that ships with support, you might have some luck with MSFT's .NET offerings

note : according to this page Java does have support of OpenType. I'm not really sure what it would take to actually use it, however.

  3. Thanks for the reply, I'll check out LaTeX. Also with Java, I think you have to manually call the tables or something because there's no method that I've found that will just handle an OpenType font with a PostScript outline, but if it had a Type1 outline, it would handle it.

Also, maybe I should have said this: I have to basically rewrite how to handle the permit because we use to do it fine through coldfusion before Windows SP2. Now it still works fine, but we can't get it to print without showing the print dialog ( was considered a security fix in SP2). So maybe instead of working on fonts you know a way to have a computer call your customized print dialog prompt or not call the print dialog prompt at all. I know I can edit comdlg32.dll to customize the prompt, but they didn't really like that idea since I would have to replace the dll. Any info is helpful.
