top fan? yes or no? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Recently my room has gone up about 15C degrees, and my computer is about 13C hotter also. Ihave a Logisys ring rang clear case with 1X80mm intake fan 1 side intake fan 1rear exaust fan. The Question is im thinking of modding a 80mm fan whole in the top of my case im wondering if it would make a difference?

  2. It depends what the cause of the heat is. I worked on my case to make it accept a 120mm in the back instead of an 80mm, and added a second 80mm to the side panel, dropped temperatures in the system 3-5c. I would assume an 80mm in the top would help a bit, but you would probably want it to be an exhaust. If you want to wait a few weeks, I plan to add dual 60mm to the top of mine, can tell you how they helped, if any.

    Yes! Definitely!

I did this just a few weeks back, and although I did an appalling unclean effort at making a hole, the impact on cooling was instantly noticable. My case has a natural hot spot at the top of the case just behind the psu and so placing a silent low rpm fan there made all the difference to case temperatures. The actual result for me was a higher mem overclock thanks to the lower temperatures.

I kick myself for not doing it sooner. Well worth the effort.

  4. If you have room for larger front and rear fan case cut-outs, I think that replacing the front and rear 80mm fans with 120mm fans is a better solution than a 120mm top-vent suckhole.

A sucking 120mm top-vent fan will create negative case pressure. Negative case pressure works against your PS cooling fan, stalling PS air flow and overheating your PS.

Side vent fans are all the rage - but harddrives are still mounted in the front of the case. While side-vents may tend to spot-cool your CPU, they also provide an air-flow path that runs from the side-vent to the rear exhaust, reducing front intake air flow over your hard drives - resulting in warmer drive operation.

I that suggest optimized front-to-back air flow is still the best ventilation configuration for keeping all components cool.

    Hope this helps!
