Worth an upgrade 3500+ ( 2 Views )
-
Ok I have a 3500+ and a 7800GTX SLi setup. The thing is I think the processor is gimping my graphics cards. Games like Oblivion sometimes chop in certain areas. I am not much into overclocking, but who knows?
Do you guys think its worthy to upgrade. The PC would be for everything but with an emphisis on Gaming.
If your answer is yes, whaddhya think X2, Opty, wait for AM2 (requires new RAM and MB) be specific...
Thanks

The only real upgrades to that CPU are basically nothing more than OCed versions of it. The dual core chips don't function any faster in most games at this point because they are almost all single threaded. I would advise against upgrading.

I think youd be dissapointed when you still see the occasional chopping in that game even if you had a better cpu, id wait.

I'd say a bump in cpu speed via overclocking might help a little if you are running at stock speeds. If you are unfamiliar with overclocking here is a really good guide to help you understand all about it. Its a big article but well worth the read:

probably not worth it. I don't notice a diff from my 3800+ venice 2.4ghz and my opteron 148 at 2.75ghz. I thought the extra clock speed and the 1mb of cache will make a diff. It does not sadly. I mean i see no performance diff in battlefield 2. I even overclocked my ram to DDR 500 but no good
But my 3dmark05 score went from 10400 to 11300 after changing the cpu but thats about it.

I don't know if BF2 taxes the system as much as Oblivion, but from reading the article from the link that was posted Oblivion seems like it could use the extra horsepower. Besides, its a free bump in speed and if it doesn't work out the OP isn't out anything. I'd sure give it a shot just to see if it helps any.
