I can't wait 'til EBay gets flooded with these for the bargain price of $1,200. :p

Fry's has Patriot 1GB USB flash drives for $29.99 OTD.
2GB flash drives go for $50 on sale. Why can't a 16GB flash drive cost less than $500?

I'm going to mortgage my condo and buy 10!
(oğuzhan, China)
Do you think this is a price mistake? Or is it really that expensive?
Sad thing, they probably only cost no more than a few dollars to make. Even if you figured in the R&D... They still aren't worth that much.

Because the 16GB drive is not much bigger than the 2GB drive. IT costs more money to cram data into smaller spaces. If you'd like a 16GB flash drive that's a stack of 8 flash drives put together, then you might as well get a portable hard drive lol.

:p
If you look in a transparent flash drive (or with a window like PNY drives), you can see that the flash memory chip is small. The PCB it's on is mostly empty for a drive the size of the buslink one. The Buslink 16GB-64GB models are pretty thick, probably because it uses 2 double sided circuit boards (or 4 single sided ones) with 4 or 8 flash chips inside. It's shouldn't cost an extra $1000 for that.
I don't need 16GB, but a reasonably priced 16GB drive would push down 8GB and 4GB prices.
(burcu, Lebanon)
4x the price of a 4GB flash chip, $10 for the circuit boards and assembly, plus some profit, plus some gauging, plus some R&D costs...
(fatos, Guatemala)
buys 3
3 years later...
dambit only 16 gb on these stupid things... and they only run at usb 2.0 gawd they arent worth keeping.
runs down to the dollar store to pick up a 60 gb flash drive running on usb 9.2...

USB 9.2?! Preposterous!
And on the "wtf that's so expensive" front. I can get a 4GB microdrive for ~$100, or a 4GB 3.5" PATA drive for $5. Is "you pay for the size" so hard to grasp?

I'm afraid of no-name brand storage media.
(gülçin, Nauru)
BusLink is hardly considered a "no-name brand." ;)

Pay for size and no moving parts ;).
(yusuf, Niger)
Fry's has Corsair 4GB USB flash drives for $99AR this week. Even without the $20 rebate, that's just $480 + tax out the door for 16GB of USB flash storage (~$499 after tax and one $20 rebate in my area).
:woowoo: 4 x 19MB/s (R) and 13MB/s (W) drives in RAID0. :p That would be pretty competitive with 7200RPM SATA-150 hard drives at only 100x the price per GB (~$31/GB vs $0.30/GB... BTW Maxtor 300GB SATA drives are $99.99 at Fry's this weekend).

Why not just get an 80 gig laptop hard drive and an enclosure? I could buy a whole new desktop for that amount of storage, no thanks
(ozge, Israel)
I was half-expecting to see a solid-gold USB thumb drive encrusted with diamonds, now im dissapointed.

Free shipping cinches the deal.
(ali ahmet, Chad)
For that price, does it jump out of your pocket before it gets accidentally tossed into the washing machine. You would think for close to $1500, they could engineer a little self preservation into the damn things :D
(garipgezer, Bermuda)
ah, nothing like spending 1500 on something that you will inevitably lose or get stolen from you. All I can hope for is that some guy next to me on the metro buys one

Jewelry, such as wedding rings are typically worth (a lot) more and are just as easy to lose or have stolen.

except meant for something important - like a wedding

A girl who would rather take a super duper USB drive over a wedding ring is a keeper in my book. ;)
