Upgrade advice please...... ( 3 Views )

1. I've been away from the computer scene for some time now and need some upgrade advice. my system is as follows,
   
   Asus P4B266 Motherboard.
   Pentium 4 1.6Ghz Northwood cpu running at 2.2Ghz.
   Asus V8440 Graphics card.
   1Gig Geil Memory.
   
   Needless to say gaming performance with games such as Quake 4 and Doom 3 is pretty poor! i have a budget in the region of £200, what would be a cost effect boost? buy one of the following...
   
   Nvidea 6600GT?
   PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB?
   Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB ?
   XFX GeForce 6800 GS Extreme XT Edition 256MB?
   BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB?
   
   I read somewhere that certain Radion cards can have their bios "tweaked" to improve performance, is this a viable option?

2. You might want to save a little more and go with a complete upgrade. Putting a fancy paintjob on a crap car still aint gunna make it go any faster. :)

   Point taken, but surely a more "Modern" card will give a substantial boost? As i have already stated my budget is limited, if i had the spare cash then i would build a system from scratch.

4. If you absolutely must upgrade, then I wouldn't invest no more than an X800GTO or a 6800GS.. but no more..
   
   As someone mentioned, it would be best to just save up for a complete overhaul.
