Got a whole new rig, wondering what I should do with HD. ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I have a 200 gigger that have a lot of stuff including windows on it. I was wondering would it be a good idea to just plug the hard drive and boot windows with the new system. Remember that EVERYTHING is new including, CPU, motherboard, Video card, RAM.

Would there be any driver issues?

  2. not a good idea...

  3. yea big driver issue with new motherboard

  4. Unless you are going to a chipset that uses the same drivers, it might not even boot.

  5. It most likely will boot, it will just take forever (don't be surprised at 30 min or so) as it detects and installs all your new hardware in the background. Recently did that myself when I moved to the ASRock 939 Dual SATA2 (ULi based) after my MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat (nForce based) died and MSI wouldn't honor their warranty. It would be a good idea to back your data up to another machine if possible first, if not, I would advise backing it up as soon as possible afterwards and doing a clean install ASAP. One other thing to keep in mind is that this will most likely trigger a re-activation if you are using a retail copy of Windows XP. Worst case if your nic is not installed properly by default is that you'll have to call their toll free number and jump through their re-activation hoops - annoying, but still does the trick.

  6. Reinstall windows on the hopefully existent HDD you put in the new comp, that drop in the old one as slave (if IDE) and copy over your stuff. Then format and use as pr0-, er images drive.
