Laptop LCD just went .... DARK? ( 2 Views )

1. So my suitemate's laptop screenie just went very very dark. He literally has to tilt the panel all the way back and put it under the light just to see a little bit of the icons.
   
   He said it was working fine and then he went to do laundry. When he comes back, the screen just went really dark. It isn't the contrast and brightness as well because I've already adjusted those to the max.
   
   My guess is that his Laptop LCD has gone bonkers. Anyone has any idea?

2. Sounds like the backlight went out. You should be able to find a replacement on ebay if its a reasonably common model.

3. The inverter for the backlight has gone bad. Generally, they can be repaired if you know how to diagnose it and replace the parts. Otherwise it will have to be replaced. You can run it using the external video but be careful if you leave the inverter connected. I've seen them melt through monitor bezels and get extremely hot.

4. Make sure the screen dimmer switch/latch isn't pushed in (i.e. stuck). This happened to my friend's laptop. It's a long shot, but I figured it's worth a try for you.

5. i had the same problem one time , but was mechanical in nature.
   was forced to move the screen slightly to get a picture to come up.
   i think i had dropped in once and that may have been the cause of problem.
   
   kind of like the old tv set where a good slap to the side of the set would
   casue the picture to come back on. not saying that is your problem, but a possibility if you ever dropped it..

8. Thank you all for the info.
   
   After some researching, it did turn out to be a bad inverter board. Anyone has any idea as to how to replace one?
   
   The model of the laptop is a Compaq Presario X1000
