Upgraded from 1GB to 2GB RAM now can't overclock? ( 2 Views )

I just doubled my ram from 1GB to 2GB but now I can no longer overclock my cpu as far.
Heres what I could do before the RAM upgrade:
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (1.8 bios)
XP 3200+ Winchester @ 2400MHz (240x10 @ 1.4v) w/XP-90
1GB Corsair TWINX-3200XLPRO (2x512, 2-2-2-5 @ 2.75v, 3:2, 208MHz, Dual Channel)
Now, ever since I put in another matching pair of the TWINX-3200XLPRO, the max speed I can reach is 2350MHz (235x10 @ 1.5v) and 2-2-2-5, 195MHz on the 2GB (4x512) in dual channel. It's quite odd as I can usually, but not always, boot into windows at 2.4GHz but then my computer will seem to hiccup for about 30secs, freezing the mouse and not showing any HD LEDor RAM LED activity, and then unlock for a few more seconds and hiccup again. This cycle will repeat itself a couple times before it just locks up for good. The only way to stop this is to drop the htt down from 240 to 235...
Do you think it could just be my crappy MSI board not liking all 4 DIMMs full? Or, perhaps the second matched pair I bought of the RAM is somehow defective? But even then it doesn't make much sense to me since with the divider it's only clocked at 200MHz when I'm @ 240 fsb.
I'm clueless here. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys (and gals)...

It woldnt have been better to run 2x1gb, but I undestand your position and why you didnt. Most motherboards dont run 4 sticks as well as 2 sticks and in a recent xbit article actually is somtimes slower than 1gb. In overclocking however, they didnt test so I cant speak for that. Thats just the way it is though :(..may want to try running in 2T mode if not already (idk if this will help), or upping DIMM voltage? Also try loosening timings.
Here's that link to the article I spoke of: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mem...y/2gb-ram.html
Good luck on this! and run a few Memtest cycles when you sleep on it :)

It is already running at 2T but I will try raising some of the timings and let you know how that goes. Hopefully that and a little massaging of the DIMM voltage will fix that. Up to now I've only tried messing with voltage as I know the ram is capable of the 2-2-2-5 timings even at 220MHz. It's just odd how I can run 200MHz on the ram @ 1:1 but not 3:2. Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it a shot. If anyone else still has any ideas, please feel free to spit them out :P Thanks.

Awesome article by the way... Very nice read. I think this is the problem I'm currently facing:
Quote:
The use of four memory modules in Athlon 64 platforms reduces significantly the overclocking potential of the platform by limiting the bus frequency increase. For example, a lot of Socket 939 mainboards refuse to raise the clock generator frequency over 240-250MHz when they are equipped with a full set of four memory DIMMs. By simply removing a pair of DIMMs from the system you can immediately raise the stability bar beyond 300MHz.

Maybe they did do some tests on OCing..hmm :o must have missed that when I was reading it in Digital Design class. lol.

I believe that is is normal to toose a bit of you ability to OC when you go from 2 DIMMs to 4. Even if you get the best memory you can. It has more to do with the memory controller than the memory.
