Connecting two computers ( 2 Views )

1. Hello fellow computer geniuses. I have run into a problem. Unfortunately my expertise of computers does not exceed anything past the case. I need help getting the information from one computer to another. I have over 20 GB of data, files, songs, movies, etc. that I want to transfer from my old computer to my new one. If I had a DVD burner, this would not be a problem, however alot of the information I want to transfer exceeds 700 MB. This is what I am working with:
   
   2 computers
   - New computer has an ethernet card as well as USB ports
   - Old computer has an ethernet card as well as USB ports
   A router
   2 lines of cat 5 wire
   Both computers are running Windows XP Professional
   
   Keep in mind that I only have 2 lines of cat5 wire, which means if I use the router I will not have an internet connection. Any advice is a great help. Thank you

2. Hook both computers up to your router and enable file sharing. Copy the files from old PC to new PC.

3. I tried that, the files in the 'shared documents' folder were not the same perhaps I did not apply file sharing correctly?
   
   If it makes a difference, I located another line of cat 5 wire.

4. WHat do you mean not the same ?
   
   if you copy a file from computer A to computer B and it completes they should be the same
   
   how are you comparing the files to decide if they are the same or not ?

5. Let's start simple... How do I enable file sharing?
   
   Let's say I have both computers connected to the router.

   The files were never copied. I don't know how to simply copy one file from my old computer to my new one.

   Problem solved, just took out the hard drive and hooked it up to the new computer. Take that WinXP Network!

9. ... Network setup is simple if you read the links or do a network wizard setup from control panel. If they were on the same workgroup and file sharing was on it should have been simple.. but i guess sometimes its too hard for the simplist of minds :p

10. for future reference here's what you would do. Connect both computers to the router (no internet connection necessary). Right click on your local area network connection and make sure ''file and printer sharing" is checked. Share the folder on PCA that has the files you want to move onto PCB by right clicking on the folder and selecting sharing. make sure both of the computers are on the same workgroup by right clicking on my computer and going to computer name, change. on PCB right click on my computer and click map network drive. under the workgroup you should see PCA and PCB and the shared drive under PCA. select the folder and map it. It's now visible under my computer. Copy the files from that folder onto PCB's harddrive.
