Laptop upgrade questions!! yay! ( 2 Views )

Toshiba Laptop Alright guys, I just got this today and was wondering...
I was told I can upgrade the CPU, RAM, and dvd/cd drive... I upgraded ram before on a laptop, but never the CPU... So what process would this involve?
The processor is an Intel Celeron M s478. Would I be able to use a Pentium M in it's place? What about Celeron's? I believe those are different socket types...
I am not going to upgrade now, but just for future knowledge now.
Oh yeah, whats up with centrinos too? Do they not make them anymore and I see on ebay that they sell pretty cheap. This seems like it will be fun for future tweaking. YAY.

Toshiba has been making some pretty crappy laptops lately, just FYI...
anyhow, both celeron Ms and Pentium M's are the same socket type, and you can replace the CPU. this involves taking the whole thing apart and swapping the CPU, it can be difficult if you have never done it before, but once you get the hang of taking laptops apart, its just about as easy as a desktop.
youll have to look up whether or not the chipset (radeon xpress in this case) will support a 533mhz FSB Pentium M, i would assume it does... but im not sure.
Centrino is a marketing thing, a combination of a Pentium M (or now Core Duo/Solo), an Intel m-PCI/m-PCIe wireless card, and an Intel Chipset (either i855, i915m, or i945m right now). its still very alive and kicking, but older Pentium M processors are quite cheap on ebay.
if youre used to any sort of high resolution screen, XGA on a 15" LCD is going to look HUGE. I can barely stand XGA on a 14" screen, SXGA+ is a much better fit.
Ive found that if you buy a laptop with the intent of upgrading it, you end up spending more than just ploping down the cash in teh first place - i would highly suggest jsut getting something youll like more to begin with. youll undoubtly have more fun upgrading it, but itll probably end up costing more and voiding your warranty should something go wrong, something that is NEVER fun with a laptop.
