3rd Party Infrared port w/ Frontrow? ( 2 Views )
-
Does anyone know if the Apple Remote, that comes with the new iMac and MacBook Pros, can interface with any 3rd party USB Infrared ports, such as the Keyspan Express Remote?
Here's the application:
iMac in office. Connected to TV in living room through the wall (already have this completed with some great wall plates from radio shack). Using TV mirroring, whatever I see on the iMac I see on the TV. Great, but now, I need the simplicity of the Apple Remote to tap into FrontRow to access my music, movies, photos, etc from the living room.
So, I'm wondering if I get something like the Keyspan express remote, and just use the USB Infrared receiver part of it, run it through the wall as well, and strategically mount on or near TV, if the Apple Remote could interface through this?
If so, it would be the perfect solution. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Not sure if that would work but I don't think it would. The safe bet would prob be to get a remote extender. Radio Shak sells them. Pretty much you have an ir reciever with a radio trasmitter in it in the tv room and another box that retransmits it by the apple.

Yea I would think that should work for you.

Most stores that sell DirecTV or DISH carry the extenders for people with one reciever feeding multiple TV's. Probably cheaper than Radio Shack.

I already got the Extenders at Radio Shack before that last post...
But, they work beautifully.. This is a perfect, simple work around. $44 wasn't too much to bother with hunting any other's down.
My next experiment will be to see if I can program a typical universal TV remote to control FrontRow on one of the Aux settings. Although, using the simple Apple Remote in the living room will be so sweet.
If I can get around to it, maybe I'll create a video podcast showing the setup.

You should easily beable to program a harmony or pronto remote to work with front row.
