Which Linux distro is the best and why?
Also, which is easiest for 1st timers?

Vague question. What do you want to use it for? Do you have any preferences as far as KDE or Gnome? What kind of hardware are you going to be using?
I'll recommend SimplyMepis cause you can install from the liveCD and it's very easy to setup, but another distro might suit you better.

OK, how about this: In YOUR opinion, to you, which distro do you personally like? And why do YOU like it?
Also, which distro is best for 1st time users?

I love FreeBSD for reasons I've posted a lot of times. (It's clean, fast, well documented, and it feels much more orderly than the linux distros I've tried).
It's not the easiest one to start with, though. You could try PC-BSD?

It all depends on what you are doing.
Since you have no purpose in mind and will end up getting bored or frustrated because you were expecting something magical and will end up reinstalling windows anyway, just install Ubuntu linux.
Holy run on sentence.

Actually all I want with Linux is a spyware-free alternative to Windows. I have Windows XP on one HDD and Linux on the other... it's strickly a web thing.
And another thing, exactly why would I expect Linux to be magical????

Im using linux for the same reasons on my main pc. Go with SimplyMepis. Installation is easy and it has nearly everything you need and if it doesnt have it you can just use kpackage to get anything else from the debian repositories.

Fedora or Ubuntu. Try both, then keep using the one that you like the most. Ubuntu is Debian based and Fedora is Redhat based. Both use two of the most common package systems. Either one should be easy enough for beginners to use.

I am using Ubuntu on my work laptop right now (Dell M70). I find that it works really well for just about everything except connecting to my Exchange server. I have not figured that out yet.
Also - my laptop has the Dell Truemobile 1300 card which does not have native Linux drivers. I have downloaded the NDIS wrapper but have not tried it yet.

Out of the the 7 different distros I have tried over the last several months. Mepis was probably the easiest to get up and running, and it seems to run on just about any hardware. right now I have SuSE 10 on a chaintech 7NIL1, 3000+ 400FSB XP. I also have Mandriva 2006 on a Shuttle SN41G 2800 XP. Mandriva seems to be kind of picky about hardware. I tried it on a Abit IS-10 P4 2.4C, and I had shut down problems I never did get resolved.I also tried Mandriva on a soltek Qbic 3704 . I had the same shut down problems on that. I had Mepis on all of the above, and a Asus A7N8X Delx. it was by far the quickest, and easiest install and setup.
