What is wrong with this rig? ( 1 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I built a new system about a year ago and recently it has been making some really weird noises. The first thing I checked was all the fans and then second was the hard drive which are the only things that I though could even cause a PC to make noise like this. After a long while I realized the noises coincided with the movement of the mouse/scroll as well as anytime the PC is under any kind of load. In other words if the PC is totally idle the noises dont ever happen and as the load gets heavier the more noise it makes. Anyone have any idea at all what this could be?

    Sys Specs:
    A64 3500+
    2GB Corsair PC-3200
    GF 6800 GT AGP
    80GB SATA HD

Just to make sure it wasnt a fan problem i took out all the fans except the CPU/PSU fans the noise seems to be coming from around the CPU but I have switched out the Fan/heatsink so it isnt that. I have never encountered something like this before so any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  2. What kind of noise is your computer making.

    Clicks, beeps, grinding?

  3. its like long beeps and kind of crackling noises. Another weird thing I noticed was I can hear some of the noises in my headphones too? weird?

  4. It's prolly comes out from the speaker? Are you using the onboard soundcard?

  5. what kind of power supply does the thing have in it? do you run it using a device with AVR? (UPS or stand alone power filter)

depending on the noise-- i know sometimes with PS/2 connected mice, you can hear the mouse polling over speakers if it's really quiet.

  6. that noise is probably electrical interference from the PSU and/or leads & traces on the motherboard, i have yet to hear of a way to fix it except by getting an new mouse, PSU, and/or mobo

  7. It would seem like your mouse is sending interference through your motherboard to your sound output. These guys are right, you have to consider swapping parts. First is a quick thing: if you've got a dedicated sound card, stick it in the PCI slot closest to the bottom/ edge of the motherboard. Also, if you have a USB mouse, try a different USB port. If you still get interference, try each PCI slot with the mouse in every possible port.

This sort of thing is sometimes a sign of power supply problems, so if you're into buying things that aren't mice or sound cards (swap these first) then check out your local web browser to newegg.com and look at a new PSU. Do yourself a favor, spend the extra $10 and get something with active PFC (power factor correction?) to better condition your electricity.

  8. I had this problem on a old VIA chipset 550mhz K6-2..thing caused me the most problems I swear! It has to do with either drivers (for -->), sound card, or both.

  9. Sorry for no reply I have been busy as hell lately. Ok more stuff to report, I started noticing some artifacts on my monitor as of late that coincide witht he noises. Its hard to notice on the desktop but when I try and load up a 3D game you can seem them clearly. I was reading some stuff online about cards that sometimes causes weird digital sounds like the ones I tried to describe and at the same time casuing artifacts to appear on the screen. I still can't figure out how it all ties in to the mouse though.

  10. Ok I switched out my 6800 GT for my old GF3 Ti-200 I had lying around and no more artifacts... but I still got the noises so I know the two arent related... my life sucks. Hopefully my warranty is still good on the gf 6800 gt

This is what I would lean towards. I am having similar problems. One of my harddrives started to make a high pitched whine and shortly after that, the graphics started to go a little crazy. I switched out the graphics card to an older one that uses less power and now the graphics are fine and the hard drive doesn't whine as much. I've ordered a new PSU and hopefully that will solve the problem.
