New Mousing Surface for a Logitech G7 ( 3 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Hey everyone, before you jump on me and call me a n00b, I've been through quite a few of the revies in the keyboard/mouse/surface FAQ. I'm just looking for a bit more input before making a final decision.

I have a Logitech G7, and love it to death. There's no way I'll be replacing it anytime soon.

My mousepad however is another story. To put it simply, this thing is, well, old. How old you ask? Well, it came when I oredered Max Payne. Yeah... we're talking 2001ish here. I've been using it since, and it's served me well. But I don't QUITE think it's good enough for the G7.

So far I'm leaning towards and Icemat. I saw Newegg carries LOTS of different Icemats...and I don't know which one I'd get. Color wise, black, blue, and transparent are the only ones I'd REALLY want (though I could go for others...). I also noticed there's the Icemat and Icemat 2... now what's the difference? Also, I'm assuming the G7 won't track on a transparent pad. Anyone have any experience with this?

Like I said I'm leaning towards an Icemat but I'm open to other options (cause the Icemat is expensive!). The main thing I don't want is a poster sized mousepad. 11 x 17 is a bit excessive! I'd guess my Max Payne mousepad is 9 x 7 at best and it's worked fine for me, though I'd be willing to step up a bit sizewise.

Oh, a few more things. I have no preference for soft or hard. A mouse clip, if included, should be removable. I don't need it. And I don't want to plug in my mousepad, so the TT Gamma is out of the question.

  3. Func Archetype. I've used the original Func 1030 and now have the Func Archetype MBA (aluminum instead of plastic base). I use the smoother side with my G7.

You can even customize the surface art to an extent:

  4. I have a G7 and I use a FUNC F-SERIES F10.S 17"

I love it. My G7 glides across it like a bowling ball down an alley. It's really big too.

  5. If you go with the func don't get the aluminum base with a wireless mouse... I believe they even warn you against using a wireless mouse.

  6. razor xact mat. I love the two different kinds of surfances one is smooth and one is rough. I like the rough one as it seems like there is less friction as my mouse only glides on the raised parts.

  7. OK, I'm leaning towards the Corepad Magna now. It's one that I had missed in the review section of Rich's thread (you didn't actually think I checked out EVERY pad, did you?)

A question or two about it...

One of the review mentioned the Skatez are necessary for best performance. Should I worry about getting the ones specifically for the G7 (sold seperately). I'm planning on it as of now, but I know that the G7 has some nice feet on it. I don't want to get it without the Skatez then have to trim the ones with the pad to fit my G7... not to mention having to peel off the perfectly fine feet on my G7.

Archetype is a bit pricier, not to mention it doesn't seem to be in stock any of my favorite stores. Icemat is obviously pricey... but I'm still browsing a bit before buying.

Could you please point out a link where you saw this? I didn't see anything about this on Func's site. I had a corded Mx518 originally when I got it.

I've been using the aluminum base with no interference or other issues whatsoever with the G7. My transmitter/battery charger is about 14 inches away on my desk.

The plastic base is nice for the archetype too. It is more of a plastic than the rubber base that the Func 1030 had which tended to warp a little if you wrist sat on the edge like on my old 1030.

The Func Archetype has both the 10 smooth side and the 30 rough side like the old 1030 but the larger 10 and 30 pads from func are not flippable.

The Razer xactmat is also metal. A friend of mine's used his mx1000 and G7 on that with no issues also.

Problem with the Archetype, is getting it in stock. However, seeing how I'm using a cloth pad right now, I know I'll be happy with any mousepad whatsoever. That's why I MAY go with the Magna. Of course, I have a G7...

Does the Archetype require any sort of special pads or something? That could be a major plus if it runs smooth out of the box, as opposed to the Magna which supposedly requires those Skatez. I just might shop around to get a Archetype.

I don't have a link but on the back of my Func 1030 MBA limited edition box it says: "Please note: The aluminum base may reduce the range of wireless mice"

  11. Have the MOD move this thread to general Hardware and you should get a better response. :)

Thanks. There's no quote like that on my Archetype MBA box or any of the printed stuff that came with it.

For the question on whether you need special feet for the Func, no you don't. The G7 slides on the Func (both sides) like butter.

I was able to find mine in stock at Newegg. I did a "notify me when it's in stock" back when the MBA were apparently out of stock at the Func site back until late January back in December and it came in stock the next day but sold old quickly after I got my order in.

I just wanted aluminum this time with the archetype because my old func base had worn out of shape and I wasn't sure if they had change the base on the archetype.

The plastic on the new archetype base is not rubbery like the original 1030 and I think it would not change shape over time. My friend got the plastic based archetype to replace his Razr Exactamat.

  13. i've got a really ghetto mouse pad that actually works a lot better than my old ratpadz. basically i cut off one of the sides from an old 3 ring binder, the kind with the hard, smooth surface, not the plastic or fake leather kind. the texture is a lot like the smoother side of my old func 1030 and works really well.

  15. lol...I just started looking for a new mousepad for my Logitech and I'm using the same Max Payne mousepad too :). I was gonna start a post myself...small world.

I was thinking about the razer exactmat or the sUrface 1030 Archetype.

Well, no matter what we get, I think we'll both notice a huge difference :D

  17. The 1030 is too small in my opinion. It's a great surface, but I kept going off the edge and the bottom didnt stick to my desk very well. The new Fseries is perfect, though.

  18. DudeItsMe...

I have the G7 and had issues with the Icemat. It would not track the mouse...almost like it wasn't plugged in. The latest drivers from Logitech helped...the mouse was able to track but when I had to change out the battery...I had to shut down the Logitech software and restart it for it to track again. And since changing the batteries on the G7 is a frequent occurence...it was a pain.

I switched to a Steelpad S&S and all has been well.

Thanks... I had heard something like that after browsing some more. I didn't know that you had to reset the software to resume tracking though. Icemat is definetly not for the G7.

  21. OK so I got the Corepad Magna, it works great.

Only thing is, it seems like I'm switching batteries more often with this thing. Sometimes twice a day. Either I started sitting on my computer a lot more, or this mousepad causes my G7 to use batteries much faster. It's not a huge issue. Has anyone else noticed this with a glass mousepad (I'm guessing the glass is the culprit)

    (günay, Viet Nam)

  22. bleh, im still working on my mx310/func 1030 surface setup for the past 3 years, i think i need to spice up my shit a little bit. or not too many good mouses to get right now. But ehh the system is still the mx system so its not really gonna be a huge difference besides the model type of the mouse

  23. Definitely the Func F10.s 17". I love mine, came from a Func 1030 and would never look back! This thing is freakin huge and my Copperhead glides across it like GLASS!!!

    (murat, Switzerland)

  24. Does the corepad magna still use the rubber backing? I have the original corepad and replaced the rubber backing with rubber feet but it still goes off center a lot. I'm looking to replace it because it's not big enough for me anymore. I'm thinking either the White Icemat 2 (why doesn't any place have the white one in stock?) or the larger corepad.

That sucks. I wouldn't want ot change batteries once a week. MX1000 ftw.

    (Emrah, Serbia and Montenegro)

  26. That's why I don't like ultra high performance wireless mice... they suck batteriess dry like . . . er, a slutty robot! or something like that. ;) for my gaming mice I have gone corded ever since the mx700..

    (ercan, Fiji)

  27. Dude I've had the same mousepad since like 1996. Works fine for me

I've got a Logitech MX510 and it works fine for me. This mousepad is just some random piece of garbage I got through a companies advertising.

Some of my friends dont even use a mousepad. This one dude who is great at CS 1.6 and plays in Cal-M just sticks his mouse on the wooden desk. I'm all like wtf?!?!

  28. Do you guys have any idea how easy it is to switch batteries for the G7? Saying you don't want to do it is like saying you don't want to tie your shoes because it takes too long.

    (cerennimo, Zimbabwe)

  29. Yes - I know - it's a pretty slick batt hot swap cartrige system.. that's the only mouse I would consider going wireless again for my gaming rig with..
