Best $100-$150 motherboard for 920D? ( 2 Views )
-
Hi
i am planning to buy a pentium 920D, and i heard people are getting 4ghz results using the 975x board, which is over 250 and i cant affort it. i also looked at ASUS P5LD2-vm for around $100 but heard that some people cannot overclock the FSB over 225. anyone brought a 920D already and will recommand which motherboard?

I'm in your boat too. I ordered a P5LD2 but I heard that they don't play nice with the 9XX series so I'll probably end up just returning it. I'm hearing good things about the P5WD2-P though, might pick one of those up.

if you wanna get something cheap that will overclock well you could try the asus p5p800 se (865 chipset based) ...it supports presler and cedar mill, but you will probably need an older lga775 p4 to update to the supporting bios...
that board is right around 90 bucks...89 at the egg...
you might have luck with a 945p based board...but from what i have seen the ones that overclock well are the "premium" models and they cost over $150, so you mine as well just get a 955x based board...
if you want something newer and you can spend about 160 you could get the 955x based abit aw8 or equivalent...that should overclock nice...
i think im gonna try a p5p800 se for the hell of it, it cheap...so why not? people have gotten over 300 mhz fsb on them before...

I thought you need a 975X motherboard to even run a Presler chip. Am I wrong?

Yes. 945 and 955 support Preslers.

I know it is a discouraged idea due to the lack of overclocking-
I have 2 D945PSN Intel motherboards and have had zero issues with them at all.
They are great boards that are very cheap and stable.
Ebay has them for cheap. Just an idea.

Let us know how high you get the 920 on your P5LD2. I have the same board and am looking to upgrade to a 920, so I'd really like to know.

with the release of the asus 975x, the p5wd2-prem went down under 200. if you dont need the premium, you could always get the non-premium one but the diff isnt that big.
i ordered my p5wd2-prem from newegg and it came with 0519 bios. very good combo with the 920D. i easily OC it to 266fsb @ 3.74ghz .. right now im at 4ghz 286fsb, i had to up the vcore a lil bit though. currently @ 1.36V
