PC only powers down sometimes. ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I've tried every possible fix that I came across on the internet.
The funny thing is it powers down sometimes, and it doesn't most of the time. (especially after playing a game).

It just stalls on the "windows is shutting down" part.

I ran auto defrag (with reboot defrag) via o&o over night. And it seemed to have stalled in the middle. So I ended up having to hard boot the system.

Most of my main components are new. I've rma'd the video card, so it's definitely not the gpu. I've just bought a new psu, so it's not the psu. So it's either the motherboard, cpu or ram.

    Any ideas?

  2. Ok I found a solution.
It was related to Norton Systemworks 2006.

For some reason it prevented my system from totally powering down occasionally.
So I uninstalled it and installed Bitdefender and all seems to be fine.

Oh, I would... its a bitch. The uninstall doesn't actually remove it, I've had to go to lengths such as running all the removal tools they provide, and uninstalling an re-installing the Installsheild package... that was annoying.

On topic... interesting to note that System Works caused that. While I agree that it is a POS (slow, doesn't pick up viruses, classified bloatware etc), I didn't think that System Works would be interfering that much. Possibly a conflict with another program.

I used to run PeerGaurdian (filters TCP and UDP packets arriving at the machine, stops one that are known to be threatening), and the computer would not shut down when it was running. It would leave the desktop up, but you couldn't run anything. Killing the process in task manager quickly shut down Windows. So maybe something similar here. But, you did the right thing in getting rid of it :)
