X-Fi Fatal1ty questions ( 2 Views )

1. I've got a couple questions about the Fatal1ty... I'm planning on getting an Antec P160W case, which of course is silver, and getting all silver drives for the front panel (despite the fact that there are silver bezels). Anyway, the only problem is the sound card. I was planning on getting the X-Fi Fatal1ty, since it does have the X-Ram memory, and a nice front panel with a lot of input options... but... it seems it only comes in black.
   
   Can I get this panel in silver?
   Also, is the ribbon cable that attaches the card to the front panel a standard one? My case will use all rounded cables, and I don't want ribbon cables to ever make a return into my case :p (I would also prefer not to have to cut wires and make it round myself, especially if it's not a standard cable! And no, I don't want to be painting either)
   
   I was thinking about getting the X-Fi Elite Pro instead, but it is NOT worth an extra $100+ Canadian to me. I would rather make use of the 5 1/4 slot, and with a silver front panel.

2. The front panel only comes in black, not too sure about the cable. I don't think it is a standard ribbon cable, though. I'll be honest, I don't use my front panel, it's back in the box in case I ever get rid of the card. The only reason I would have wanted to use it was for plugging a mic and headphones into it and the mic function was a screwed up on it. So, back into the original box it went.

3. There is a discussion about the ribbon cables at the Creative forums. A regular IDE cable will not work. Someone there said this should work: http://www.computercablesource.com/detail.aspx?ID=347

4. That is just a regular IDE cable (rounded) - I have plenty of IDE cables.
   That said, if I can't get it in silver, I don't want it... It will throw off my case completely. I would use the front panel, since I do a lot of audio stuff... But it looks like that will have to wait until Creative releases one with silver :(
   
   Maybe I should pick up an Audigy 2 ZS on Ebay to tide me over.

5. Take a closer look, it has all the pins open. A regular IDE cable has one blocked off pin.
   
   If you really need it in silver and you have some extra cash why don't you check out the Elite Pro version with the silver external box.

6. Yeah I thought about that, but I'm not putting in $100+ extra cash for an external box with less plugs and such... I would've liked to put to use the 5 1/4 bay... it's too bad they don't make it in silver. Thanks for the advice, though :)

7. Im not 100% thrilled on my FPS's black face myself. Would of at least liked an option for a traditional plain beige front plate although silver wouldnt of been bad either I guess. Some of us older farts just arn't into the whole windowed and shiny black cases the kids go for today. Unfortunatly, so far, CL isnt offering any other faceplates for it yet
   
   Anyway don't know how easy it would be to remove & paint it yourself, like some did in the past with cd/dvd drives so their faceplates matched their cases
   
   As for the 40 pin cable, you want a "non-keyed" 40 pin. If go to the Creative forums someone posted a link to a real nice black rounded cable that reports say works good.

8. I think the panel looks amazing with the Antec P160.
   
   Also the connector is no problem in the P160 as I can route it behind the motherboard tray and out of sight...

9. The cable is indeed posted here... and as Slade said, it shouldn't be a problem. That said, I don't want 3 silver rom drives, and then a sore thumb black front panel :p

10. Considering the top of the P160 has a panel which is black, and the fan intake which is black...
    
    
    
    I modded my antec case with a switch right where you pull on the front panel to remove it. It controls the LED's in the fan slots which in my opinion look nice, but are a bother at night when you're trying to sleep as they are VERY bright...
    
    
    
    Here's the inside of my case, I routed the x-fi front panel connector behind my motherboard tray. I had a spare rounded cable, or could have made my own, but this solution looks more elegant in my case. I already have enough rounded cable running around.
