What do ppl use folding farms for? ( 1 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Kind of a nub question but ppl talk about them quite a bit. As my understanding goes they just leave several comps running processing stuff for long periods of time.... but what is it you guys are processing?

  2. Different projects...United Devices...Folding@Home..etc..etc...

    Hence the term "folding" ;)

Your rig needs to lose an "e" too. :p

  3. yep..you got...i just got a garden running this weekend...they are machines that just fold....nuthin else...heck there isnt anything else ON them :)

  4. I use mine for folding and heating.

    (ilhan, British Indian Ocean Territory)

  5. Yes the heating part is a good thing this time of year, ;)

all but one of my 22, soon to be 23 boxen are dedicated folders, thats all they do, and the other one folds when I am not doing other work, and it only slows down a little when I am working on it, unless I am downloading Large files, or burning CD's.

It is the warmest room in the house, also the only one with AC for in the summer. :D

    LMAO.

    I'm not sure when a garden becomes a farm.....somewhere around 10 boxen?

Billy bet Bobby he better borg a boxen garden.

  8. I thought it was when you had them all fenced in one area. Not like in the kid's room are two, one htpc, one in the den type stuff. I mean hard core, "I gotta go to Lowe's and up the breaker on my den" kinda farming.

    (Tolga, Guinea)

  9. So does that make it a big farm if you have to up the size of two breakers so the boxen can all run. ;)

and it was home depot, they are closer, :D

  10. My farm folds. That's all it does. They are slowly being used for other uses and coming out of the farm and not folding anymore. Typically as I do that, I build a new box for the farm. For me, folding is just a hobby to play with.

  11. Same here. Cut down on the heating bill too.

  12. What if you only have 1 box but you can milk it, is that 1 box then a farm?

Actually, any box can be a farm if given enough time. They all grow huge dust bunnies if left to their own devices for awhile.

  13. i have more of a ranch:) it's kinda spread out
but i deff use it for heating and creating white noise :D lol

  15. dns/dc server/ file server/ firewall box/ ftp box(Quad :p ) And they all fold 24/7 quietly heating my basement!

    (GÜLÇİN, Niger)

  16. It's to bad that this has not been put in the FAQ, but I think years ago it was generally decided that more than 7 was getting to be a farm, and 10 definitely was.
As far as what people "use" them for - I'm a pragmatic guy -
My home "garden", with points per day when I can keep them all running.
X2 3800 (dually) - to access this forum and play with GIS stuff, about 400ppd
AMD Sempron 2400+ - to run Linux and keep my skills up, about 110ppd
Compaq laptop 2.8Ghz - to surf and use for work, about 250ppd
dually 933 gateway server - used to be to surf, now to heat the house, about 60ppd
SWMBO's Applebred 1800 - to surf and do light word processing, about 100ppd
    Daughter's 2.8Ghz Dell - surf, game, homework, about 150ppd
Son's AMD Barton 2500+ - game, surf, homework, about 140ppd
Other son's AMD 2600+? - game. GIS, email, surf about 100ppd
So that's about 1200ppd for 10 CPU's that are all being used, and are not 100% folding, only about 98%.
I'd like to get a couple more to access email in the kitchen and have an HPTV . :)
