Asus A8N-E - What portions of nvidia drivers are no good? ( 1 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Hi, I just bought an A8N-E motherboard for a friend. The build will use an evga 6600gt video card; 1gb generic samsung ram; 2 SATA drives; a dual-layer dvd writer (pioneer); A64 3700; Windows XP Home; and an Antec Sonata II case (with a 450W smartpower psu).

I've noticed some people indicate that they are having problems with certain portions of the chipset drivers, specifically Nvidia's firewall.

Is there anything else I should be staying away from?

    Thanks,

    S.O.

  2. i have read that you should not install the SW IDE driver either.

  3. I have always read alot of negative feedback from people about the NVIDIA IDE drivers. Really though, I've never had problems in my testing or drive benches using them. The worst part about using NVIDIA drivers is getting a bootable RAID setup with Windows. Otherwise, I've never had any issues.

  4. Definately avoid the firewall. I've installed the SW IDE driver on bothe nforce2 and 4 systems, and haven't had problems (knocks on wood)

  5. I don't use the NV firewall or IDE drivers and my rig works great.

  6. Thanks guys. If i don't use the IDE drivers, will Windows have drivers that are sufficient? Also, are they even necessary if I use SATA drives (or are they necessary for the dvd writer?).

    Again, thanks for the info.

Yes, Windows has IDE drivers and yes, you'll need at least one IDE port for your DVD burner.

  9. do not install IDE Drivers!! It killed 400 Gigs of my information.. For example, I would run an .exe, half way through, it says the file is corrupted.. even all my ghost images... Google it, the problem is everywhere! I have no idea why HardOCP doesn't bring this problem up in reviews!

I'd imagine because the fix is simple...don't install the drivers :).

true!! but thats too late now :(....

without the drivers, u can't have raid, no? well, with my board, it showed the raid 0 (2x200GB) as 2 seperate drives (400 GB each) when i didn't have the drivers installed (and i couldn't access the hard drives).

but seriously though, if its included and it doesn't work, somthing shoudl be said... i've had every nforce since it came out, i had via chipsets and intel... I love AMD (all machines are amd), but they don't have great chipsets!

  12. I'm not sure about IDE Raid on NF4 boards  . Never tried it myself. SATA Raid should work without those drivers I'd imagine. The IDE driver issue has been present for a long time. It still plagues NF2 boards I've had. But it seems that not every board is affected the same way, so who knows what the real issue is behind the problems.
