Two bad sticks of ram? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I have two sticks of Corsair Platinum "Twinx" CMX512-3200C2PT.

    I started having problems with the machine restarting. I plugged in my USB hdd and it restarted the machine. The machine acted like it was going to start up again (it went to its "Computer has been shut down abnormally, start computer in: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Network, Last known good configuration, etc etc"). Any how it didn't start up. If i picked Last known good config it would go to the loading screen of windows and then just lock up with the bars scrolling across the screen if i picked safe mode it would throw up all the files it was loading on the screen but lock up just like before.

    I didn't feel like messing with it as finals were coming up so I just used my laptop for the time being. Well I started working on it and now the machine restarts while it is starting up or doesn't start up at all (this is with a clean install of windows XP pro). I was like well better start troubleshooting. First thing I did was run memtest.

    Run memtest with both sticks of ram in. The machine locked after Pass was at 9%. Was like well crap. Pulled one stick out tried running memtest and the machine locked at the ASUS BIOS flash screen. Pulled that stick and put the other stick of ram in. Memtest booted and run for 1min 34 seconds had 3 errors by that time and then locked at that point.

    I am assuming both stick are bad as one will not even boot the machine into memtest and the other errors like mad in memtest. What do yall think? I am assuming I just need to RMA both sticks?

  2. Please post your system specs.

    If you have an older AMD (not 64) or Intel, you could be looking at a Northbridge failure. See if you can try your sticks in another box or try some known good sticks in your box. Also, make sure your timings are set correctly in the BIOS. I've seen flakey MoBo's randomly change timings in the past causing all kinds of fun problems.

    Check your voltages too. I wouldn't rule out a failing PS as the cause of this issue either.

    They could both be bad, but the odds of both failing at once are pretty slim.

    Asus P4C800 Deluxe
    Antec 400watt PSU.

    Memtest just went nutz...when i run it again. It says its found 52k errors and counting. Prob going up 2k every 5 seconds.

  4. As for the voltages

    VCORE = 1.36
    3.3V = 3.28
    5V = 4.999
    12V = 11.916

  5. this is really strange....

    I am running a stick of my memory in my parents computer (it has a P4P800 Deluxe, My pc has a P4C800 Deluxe).

    The memory out or my parents PC so far is checking out good (it should as it has been running fine for 5 months now without any problems). It is on 79% and it is doing fine, no errors that is (there memory in my PC).

    I put my memory (my memory from my PC in there PC) and it is checking out fine. 1 complete pass and 0 errors (this is the same stick that caused 70k errors in my PC).

  6. your parents computer likes your memory that your computer hates, and your computer likes your parents memory? sounds like we have a temporary solution

    my guess to the problem is that there is something with the sticks you have that makes them "harder" to run stable, and your mobo is slowly failing. how hot is the northbride when you're gaming and stuff?

    Well i decided to leave memtest running on my computer while i was sleeping and it come up with more errors on the memory. There was also 7490 errors that were found.

    I am thinking the motherboard is going out and not the memory. Is there any way I can check this for sure? If the motherboard is going out.

  8. well, having a set of known good ram error out in your mobo is a good case against it not working right. did you ever feel the northbridge for me? i guess the temps durning memtest will be fine too, just give it some time to heat up first :p

    You just did. to make sure, boot with your parents memory if possible, and see how hot your north bridge gets like eclipse said.

    It isn't all that hot. It if fairly cool imo.

    Well i have been running memtest with my parents memory in my computer for the past 8 hours and there have been 0 errors. I also have my memory in my parents computer (1 stick) and it has run the same amount of time with 0 errors.

    So I am guessing my computer just doesn't like my memory. What would be the solution to this? Just use their memory and let them use mine? The only thing that could have caused this problem is me upgrading my bios version. I wouldn't have thought that that would have caused the problem as it worked fine for about a month before any problems even showed up. Any suggestions?

    yeah, that sounds like the best option. still weird that it's doing that, but not unheard of :p

    the crappy thing is, is my memory is better memory than theirs, plus i have a gig and they only have 512 :(. I guess this will be a good excuse to buy 2 gigs worth ;).

    I also have a sager 3880 that is getting a lot hotter than i want it too. i saw it get up to 85C today while playing WoW. I am just having the worst luck with my hardware at this current time.
