HELP! Silent Boost stuck to Athlon64!!! ( 3 Views )
-
Disregarding the other details of my situation, let's just say I need to remove my Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 cooler from my Athlon64 3200+ and both from an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2. One small problem; it doesn't come off.
Used AS5 originally on chip, used the recommended "grain of rice" amount, has spread itself out over time. Chip would run at about 35 C round the clock before dead motherboard necessitated the removal of said CPU.
Cooler "turns" about...20 degrees in each direction, but sufficient lifting force is not possibly to remove the damned thing. I've had a few of my fellow computer-savvy friends attempt to remove it, to no avail (and we've all had experience with Socket A and Socket 939 coolers).
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

Try heating the thermal compound somehow -- either by loading the CPU or using a blow-dryer to warm the heatsink.

Blowdryer works every time.

tilt it a little bit, don't just pull straight up.

Take a piece of normal sewing thread.....long enough to hang onto, and slide it across the bottom of the heatsink from the outer edge, a little pressure, and the string will "cut" the AS5 bond....once the edge starts it pretty much comes off easily.
Oh yeah, like another poster said, run about 15 minutes of Prime95 before you do that to get some heat into the thing....

Thanks for the reponses; will let you know which solutions works.

*off topic* hey cool i just got this cooler from a trade and have the same processor as u. does this thing cool well?......whats ur opinion on using it instead of my zalman 7000b alcu.
(ArDa, Japan)
Hairdryer did the trick.
Again, thanks much.

Yeah, I love the Silent Boost K8. Has kept my 3200+ under 37C, even under full load.
Have never been able to distinguish any significant noise coming from it.
For best results, pair with 120mm case fans and uber-efficient PSU :p
Have never tried the above stated Zalman cooler, but for $20 @ ewiz.com, this cooler has been a bargain.

thx alot whats ur overclock at? cuz that is a very nice load temp
on my zalman im running 2650 mhz at 1.575 volts and prime i get 52C and super pi i get 47C
so ur 37 would be GREAT if u are overclocking.

Haven't overclocked yet, but looking for some help; ASRock 939dual mobo isn't very n00b-friendly when it comes to OC'ing...check out my sig.
Suggestions on what to try? I now understand how to use HTT, FSB, multipliers and such but do not know where in the ASRock BIOS to configure said numbers.
thxmuch :p
