Tearing down Belkin UPS to replace battery ( 3 Views )
-
My batteries in my Belkin 800VA UPS have gone kaput and need to replace em. I tore it down but cant seem to get the batteries out. Im no electronics major so Im afraid to touch anything in there for fear of touching a charged capacitor.
Should I just junk it and buy a new one? :p

Thats what I would do. A client of mine had a Belkin USP die after just two years, and I recommended they toss it and buy an APC. I've not had much exposure to Belkins, but the few that I've seen haven't been very good for longevity.

I was able to disassemble and replace the battery in my Belkin 500a very easily. The nice thing is that unlike APC, Belkin uses very standardized batteries which will have alot of competing suppliers.

The 2 batteries in my 1200VA Belkin were a pain in the ass to swap out. I had to disassemble half the UPS to get them out. Once I did, it was easy to take the old batteries to a local shop and get replacements. It lasted about 2 1/2 years on the original set and it's been about 2 years since I did the swap to the new ones. Still working fine.
You should be fine. It's no more dangerous than working on your car battery but you still need to pay attention and not short anything.
I've been thinking of maybe replacing it with one of those 1000VA Tripp-Lite units they have at CostCo with the LCD display on it. I've got one running my LCD TV and audio equipment and it's been pretty good. I like being able to see the input voltage from the wall outlet since we have so many brown outs here.

If you hookup the usb cable to the Belkin and run their power software, you can see input voltage, etc. very easily.

APC's use standard batteries. Theres more suppliers of APC replacement batteries than anyone else because of their popularity and how long they've been around.
Cheap too, I just put new batteries in one of my Smart-UPS 1400 VA units for $47 after tax, and found them locally.

Yes, but their Bulldog software sucks. I got tired of it crashing or causing weird error messages.
Plus, with an LCD on the battery itself, I don't need any bloated software. Also, my Tripp-Lite is hooked up to AV equipment, so there's no computer to run any software on.
