Cheapeast/Best/Easiest/Efficient way to use my old 2800 Newcastle system? ( 4 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I was thinking of taking it downstairs and hooking it up to my 32 inch LCD TV.

    Specs:
    MSI K8N Neo Plat s754
    2GB Corsair Value Select PC3200
    AMD Athlon64 2800+ Newcastle
    Leadtek 6800GT 256MB
Probably a 160GB Western Digital i'm going to slap in it once my second 300GB drive gets here.
    Onboard sound
    CD/DVD drives.

I'm guessing I will need Windows MCE 2005? I've never done anything like this. I won't really have cable TV for awhile, so the primary focus is streaming media from the computer to the TV, like movies and such. Just want to mess around with it. The TV does have a DVI input.

Just throw ideas at me.. lol. Key thing is very low budget, working with stuff I already have (minus buying MCE if I gotta).

  2. Get a low end Vid card with DVI and S-Video (just in case you have issues with the DVI). I know I had to do a lot of video tweaking with an app called PowerBar to get my TV to display properly when using DVI.

You can also get a HD TV Tuner card and pull in all the free over the air HD broadcasts that are currently out there.

I've never used Media Center Edition before so I can't give you any advice about that.

You can also do something like this

    Have fun

  3. Are you looking for alternate ideas to an htpc? I would go the htpc route and pick up a FusionHDTV5 Lite card ($99) and pull down HDTV Over the Air (HD OTA). If you go this route, you do not need MCE if you already have XP.

EDIT: If you go his way, post over in the HTPC section of the forums and folks can better help you out. :)

  4. I'm just looking to use the system I have with my TV in the most cool/fun way possible. That's all really.

This, of course, assuming he has HDTV over the air in his area...
