Trying to make a decision between single core and dual core ( 5 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Right now I have an AMD 64 3700+ @ 2.7 and its running pretty good but all this talk about opteron's and x2 processors is getting me curious as to whether I should buy a dual core cpu or not. Right now I'm looking at the opteron 165 and 170 and the prices are ridiculous. I haven't seen either of them go below $350 (except for an OEM 165 for $299 but I actually want to buy retail with hsf.) The x2 cpu's don't seem to overclock as well as the opteron from what I have seen but they are cheaper. Any ideas as to whether I should just stick with my amd 64 3700+ or go with an expensive opteron or cheaper x2?

  2. If your 3700+ does everything you want it to do, then why upgrade? Things to ask yourself...

Is my 3700+@2.7ghz fast enough for what I use it for now?
Is it worth it to wait a few months and see if chip prices fall (X2, Opteron)?
If I upgraded to an Opteron/X2 what tangible benefits would I see?
Is the software that I currently use written for multicores?

I have a X2/3800+ that should arrive this week. My main reason for upgrading my 3200+@2.6ghz was for DVD/Video encoding using software that is multichip aware. So for me, it'll probably be worth it.

  3. my opinion, stick with the 3700+, unless you really do engage in heavy multitasking. if you need to spend money, make sure you have 2 gigs of ram, or if you have an older video card, upgrade to a 7800gt. i dont think the price for a new cpu is worth it for you, especially if you just game

  4. stick with your 3700+, if you had a 3000+ or 3200+ I would say otherwise, but you got a great chip there and it has some life left. Wait till M2 comes out and s939 chips start to get cheaper. Grab an opty then!

  5. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was just wondering if it was worth jumping from my 3700+ to a dual core cpu guess I'll just stick with my cpu for now. All the talk about opteron's can overclock a lot kind of got me thinking that they must be pretty good cpu's. I don't really do much multitasking besides maybe watch a movie while playing games.

  6. It wouldnt be worth the price in your case, as you wouldnt ever really use both cores, at least not yet :) Your cpu is plenty quick for now.

  7. IMO there is no comparison. Once you go dual core you'll never go back.

  8. personally i would just stick with the 3700 you have, its a great processor. i also have a 3700 in a rig i just built and i like it alot. ;)
if you do go dual core, i say wait on it, becuase right now not alot of things can take advantage of dual core, especially the games out right now. when things can take full advantage of dual core later on, the processors will be cheaper and better than they are right now and i think that would be the time to make the swithch.

How do you do those two things at once?
    :p

  10. For me, I plan to have a dual core Opty in my box, along with a 7800GTX, by March 20th. This is the new release date for a game I've been waiting for that will actually take advantage of dual cores; Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

  14. I have a SD 3700+ that does 2.7 GHz, but wanted to try out the Opterons. I got a 144, which would do 2.78 GHz. This is with the stock heatsink. So not much difference there. I then just recently got a 165 that does 2.6 GHz. For the games I play, I don't really notice much difference. I am sure down the road it will be useful, but by that time, I will most likely get whatever is the newest hardware is. I just got it to play around with mainly, since if I need to multi task, I have 5 computers around me.
