blue-ish tint in photos (Olympus C740) ( 3 Views )

no kitty!
  1. This morning, one of our bridge inspectors brought his digital camera to me and said that all the pictures he took yesterday turned out blue. I took a look at the pictures he took and they all have a blue tint to them... I look through the menus on the camera (Olympus C740) and didn't see anything that screamed at me as the cause.... there was a red-blue slider but it was centered.... I changed it to be closer to red and that "fixed" the blue tint.... but it seems weird that all the pictures they took last week are fine and the ones from yesterday are blue....

    Is this a death nell? (like the clicking of a hard drive).... if so, we need to be getting another camera soon.... This camera is only about 2 years old, and has only been used in the field for the last 8 or 9 months... I asked the inspector if he'd dropped it or bounced it off the railing or anything and he said he didn't think so... I don't know a whole lot of digital cameras, but I assume like anything else, parts go bad.... could the chip that collects the image be going bad (the red side dying, making each image more blue?).... it even looks blue on the preview LCD.... Any thoughts/suggestions/corrections in my logic?

  2. Maybe try looking at the WhiteBalance see if it is in one of the presets. Also use a white or, gray card to set the WB. See if the camera goes towards the blue end of the spectrum. If that is the case the CCD maybe defective or, the sensor maybe going. In which case, I would take the camera to the shop you got it from and, have them test it. That is a far as, my thinking takes me.

  3. I'll see what I can do tomorrow morning.... they're using it out in the field right now... I'll try to snag it tomorrow morning before they go out (or tonight if they come back early... I'm not sure if it will automatically do the white balance... I'll check later and get back to you on that...

  4. Well, the came back for lunch.... and I took a look at the camera.... The white balance was set to manual metering instead of auto..... changed it to Auto and voila, everything's fine.... I must have overlooked that setting before.... God only knows why it changed, the inspectors barely know how to turn the cameras on and off, let alone how to change settings.... but I guess a few "I'll try this" moments and you end up with fubared settings...... oh well... at least it's not a dying camera (yet)..... until they drop another one in the river....

    thanks for the help!

  6. Me too.... God knows we don't get to pick the cameras we "buy".... someone, somewhere in the state government does.... usually whatever is cheapest and fits the bill.... we have a C-700 (bought 2+ years ago), a C-740 (bought 6 mo. later, logical choice), and 2 C-765s (bought a the same time, about a year after the 740, again logical)... all Olympus, all similar,etc..... we say we need another camera... what do they do? buy us a Panasonic which is completely different is just about every way..... So now the program I wrote to automatically rename the pictures from the Olympus cameras is useless on the Panasonic.... I can't even figure out the naming convention of the Panasonic... I think it just starts from 1 and counts forever..... At least Olympus based their filename off of the date:

    P1010001 = Jan 1, pic 1
    P2010001 = Feb 1, pic 1
    ...
    ...
    PA01001 = Oct 1, pic 1
    PB01001 = Nov 1, pic 1

    Panasonic is just:

    P000000001
    P000000002
    .....
    P000012123

    and if you deleted all the pics after to took those 12123 pictures, the next pic would still be P000012124...
