question for you dual core folders ( 2 Views )

I'm currently planning on running 1 service on big units and one regular console on big units (not service) so I can stop one and free up the ram for games. The question is, do you have to set cpu affinity every time you restart to keep it from jumping cores all the time? Any suggestions for doing this kind of thing automagically? I'm running XP pro on the system in the sig btw. Thanks guys

You can set up both to run as a service. Somewhere around here there have been a few batch files posted that will let you start/stop the services easily (shortcut on the desktop).
I would recommend against running two bigpackets at the same time, since RAM then becomes a bottleneck. One bigpackets and one normal is probably the best config.

I don't have dual core, as of yet, but if I were setting one up.... I would probably run 2 instances, 1 big packet and 1 timeless... set the big packet one to low priority and the timeless to idle.... then you don't have to worry about CPU usage or memory consumption... the timeless WU I'm running here at work right now is only using about 11-12MB of RAM... and because it's set to idle, it surrenders to EVERYTHING..... I wouldn't even worry about turning it on and off.... if you have problems with mem usage/etc then I'd turn it off..... but I say big packet + timeless.... no need for turning it off ;)

well I'm mostly looking at the cpu affinity issue, I don't want both fah cores jumping from cpu to cpu all the time. Right now I have one core set for cpu 0 and the other to cpu 1 but i had to do that manually. I wanted to know if there was a way to do it automatically or if its really even an issue.

I'm not aware of a way to set it automatically... but I'm not sure it matters either... Has anyone rrun 2 instances with affinity set and 2 instances without affinity set and compared? you may want to check on the main folding forum...

I don't have an X2, yet, only dual CPU boxen.
But setting the affinity on them, under WinXP, makes almost no difference with folding speed.
It was only a matter of a few seconds per work unit faster with it set as to without it set.
Luck.......... :D

I'm running 2 instances on my X2,I was running bigpackets and advanced methods on both until those 751-771's came along.
With 1GB of RAM I never ran out. But of course I'm not running QMD's. And I don't play many memory sucking games.
