Any way to prevent e-mail forwarding? ( 2 Views )

Is there a technology that exists that makes it difficult for someone to forward on an e-mail that is sent to them. We're looking to sell an informational product that will be sent out in the format of a daily e-mail. The concern is that people will forward on the e-mail to others which will hurt our sales. One option of course would be to lock the content down on the website and have it be password-accessible (with a daily e-mail reminder). However, I'm just wondering if there might be any other solutions that would be feasible. Thanks!

When a recipient opens an email, an image is usually downloaded. Many sites encode a special inconspicuous code that is passed to the server when it is downloaded. You could then compare the coded record to the recipient of this email. If the email has been forwarded, there will be an incongruity between the code and the recipient email address. You could then, through a script in the page, inform the recipient that the email cannot be accessed unless they sign up at your site. You can then provide a link.
Obviously this would not be foolproof but it could serve to discourage less knowledgeable users.

No offense, but if you distribute your product through email you won't be able to control it at all. Even if you stopped them from forwarding it, they could copy text and paste it into another email or even do a screenprint and send the image of what it looked like.
Email is just not a secure medium... I would never send anything remotely sensetive through email.

I think that the cut-and-paste problem exists regardless of how you package the media. Let's say it is in a password-protected area of our site. There's still nothing that prevents someone from copying the text to a word doc and forwarding it on. However, it's just a little more difficult for someone to do then just hitting forward on their e-mail program.
The ease of e-mail to the customer is why we're considering it but we're trying to way usability with security. Any other suggestions?

Send it encrypted?
Then only give access keys to users who have authority.....
Not my area of expertise am afraid!
