New 7800GT w/ dual 2005FPW - Horizontal Span won't work? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Well, I have two Dell 2005FPW's, both hooked up by DVI to the new card. I can do dualview and even vertical spanning, but when I do horizontal span, one monitor is always distorted. It doesn't matter whether I switch the sides, one side is always messed up.

I took some pics...As you can see, everything on the right monitor is not aligned.

I'm wondering if the card is messed up...because the other day, I plugged out the monitors, and replugged them in (had to move the computer) and no images would show on the desktop (I could see BIOS and winxp loading though). I had to re-instert the card so I could see my desktops again. Anyone know what's wrong?

    Thanks

EDIT: Exchanged the card with an EVGA 7800GT CO, but the problem is still there.... :(

  2. If you could see the bios, it's probably a driver problem. Try different versions.

  3. Make sure the Refresh rate settings are the same on each pannel. E.G. 75hz/60hz = NO 75hz/75hz =YES OR 60hz/60hz = YES. Also I agree with the above post. Try different drivers. Also if all else fails swap dvi cables and see if the distortion follows the DVI cable to the other pannel.

  4. Yeah the refresh rates were both 60hz. And I doubt it's the DVI cable because it happens on whatever monitor I set as the secondary.

    I'll try a new driver (81.89), I'm running 81.84 right now.

  5. Good idea, also make sure to install the new drivers for the dell monitors.

Not sure if it's the same version on the CD but here is a link.

  6. Thanks for the help

Well, this thing is a bitch to work with because it, for some reason, won't automatically detect the monitors. I switched the cables, and again, nothing would show on the screen. I don't even know how I got it to work. A lot of restarts and cable switching magically sorted out the displays.

Anyways, it still does the same thing...argh maybe it really is defective. I'm gonna try to install the monitor drivers now....thanks

edit- Still won't work with new monitor drivers... :(

  7. Wow that looks awful I feel your pain. Maybe if you uninstalled the drivers and used driver cleaner and started from scratch again no monitor drivers or video and install fresh and redo your settings you may have some luck?

  8. Ah man...Just uninstalled completely and reinstalled. No luck

  9. just a quick question if you switch monitors does the right one still have the problem? adn also if you switch outputs?

    (atakan, Faroe Islands)

  10. That's true. since the monitors are the same model, turn off both monitors and switch them on the card. This image will be bassackwards but does the crazy screen follow the monitor or stay with the port???

    (uður, Poland)

  11. Not sure if I'm understanding the question right...

But if I switch ports while the computer is on, nothing shows on the monitors. I have to restart with only one monitor plug in and mess around from there.

And I already switched them. Still the same thing on where ever the secondary monitor is.

  12. I guess I'll call up Newegg and try to RMA it...

  13. I see so the problem follows the Port. It seems that the secondary port is the problem.

    I would say RMA it.

It doesn't matter which port I plug it into, which ever one I set as the secondary monitor in Windows will be f'ed up.

  15. GeForce 7 Series
    • GeForce 7800 GT/GTX, SLI: Rendering corruption occurs in 3D
applications when fixed aspect ratio is set for widescreen panels.
You can work around this issue if your monitor has a built-in scaler. Select
"Monitor Scaling" as an option from the NVIDIA panel, and then adjust your
display’s scaling to "1:1" or "Aspect". This will let you run 3D applications
in fullscreen mode without stretching the 3D to the edge of the screen. Note
most monitors require that you do this for each resolution that you plan to
use for 3D applications, such as 1600x1200, 1280x1024, etc.

Monitor Ordering on a Single GPU
    • Issue
The monitor order in the Display Properties Settings page is not consistently
matched with the connectors on the graphics card.
    • Explanation
The driver does not distinguish connector positions, but instead
distinguishes the display type, and consequently assigns monitor numbers
according to the display type and not according to the connector.

    • Problem
With nView Clone or Span mode enabled, video playback appears on only
one display under the following conditions:
    • Under nView Clone mode, when fullscreen video mirror is not used.
    • Under nView Span mode, when fullscreen video mirror is not used and the
video is positioned to span across both monitors.
    • Explanation
With applications that render using the hardware overlay—such as DirectX
applications—the default driver behavior for Release 60 is to enable the
hardware overlay when nView Clone or Span mode is enabled.
Because the driver supports only one hardware overlay, the video appears on
    only one display.

OpenGL Viewport Scaling Problem in Horizontal Span
    Mode
With nView Horizontal Span mode enabled, when opening an OpenGL model
in a viewport, the model image is scaled too large to fit in the viewport. The
problem occurs with such applications as Maya 5.0 and 3D Studio MAX 4.26.
This is not an NVIDIA bug, but a limitation in the application’s ability to properly
maintain the aspect ratio in Horizontal Span mode.

    • Under Windows Me and Windows XP, the NVIDIA driver is installed
in “Dualview mode” display. However, note that the second display
is not activated by default, but must be enabled.
    • Under Windows 2000, the NVIDIA Display Driver is installed in Span
mode. See the instructions in the ForceWare Graphics Drivers User’s
Guide for instructions on how to install nView DualView mode.

The only other thing I saw was to make sure you select "Horizontal Span" instead of "Dual View" in the nView settings.

  16. Here is another link to a decent article that may help I hope!

  17. Wow, thanks for the extensive post. But my problem is even further than that, as even the desktop is distorted. I tried the link in your second post, but the same thing still happens.

    Anyways...update:

I exchanged the 7800gt with a 7800GT CO. But sadly, I still have the same problem. I guess it must be either the motherboard, or something in the software. I don't think it's the DVI cables or the monitors since the distortion occurs on both monitors, depending on which I set as the primary.

Anyone have an idea to what's wrong?

    Thanks
