Is my X800XL toast? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I bought a refurbished Pci-e Powercolor X800xl from newegg and while I was playing halflife 2 my screen got a bunch of lines and weird colors. When I went to reboot my computer it had all kinds of weird symbols where the text displays and when it got back into windows the colors and lines were back.
I then pulled out my video card and reseated it, cleared the bios and booted into safe mode and removed the display driver. Upon reboot the crazy symbols were still there but it got into Windows XP fine. After I installed the Cat 5.11 drivers again the lines and colors came back. I have never overclocked this BTW.
Think I need to just send it back? I really don't want to because they will charge me a 29.00 restocking fee. There was no option to return for a replacement.

  2. It's either dead or your Power Supply isn't giving it enough juice.

Is it still covered by Powercolor's warranty?

You might wanna give em a call, they might be able to help you out.

  3. Try calling powercolore about this. Don't mention it is refurbished if they dont ask. If they do then tell the truth. If they can't help you, try removing the heatsink and removing the thermal compound on the gpu Make sure the ram pads are properly in place and put a fresh coat of Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU. This might help.

It's possible that it can. Especially if this is caused by overheating. I Purchased a Refurb 6800AGP and it had artifacting problems. I removed the heatsink and 3 ram pads were not on properly. There was barely any thermal compound and whoever redid the card did a piss poor job of putting the heatsink on it as the sink had 1 screw loose in the corner and it wasn't making full contact with the core. Removed, reaplied fresh thermal compound, tightened screw, adjusted ram pads and voila. That card is rock stable now. Sold it to friend for real cheap and he's happy with it. runs fear and everything stable with 0 artifacts.

  6. Thanks for the replies guys. I will try removing the heatsink and slap some AS5 on it. It may be heat related but I can not tell how hot the card is getting. I was susprised that it did not have the ability to show the temp. My X800 Pro did.

  7. Nobi made a good point. Make sure you have a power supply that can handle the card. Also make sure the power cable (if there is one) is plugged into a dedicated cable.

  8. I don't think it is my power suspply. I guess it could be but, I am running a 24 pin Thermaltake 430W. I also have the DFI lanparty Ultra-D mobo that has the extra plugs on the board to help power the PCIe slot (one molex and a floppy conector).
The card itself does not have a power plug.

  9. Just because the brand on the power supply is good (although Thermaltake is on the Shady power supply list in the Power supply forum here), they can still be defective.

Have you tried checking the voltage on the rails to make sure it's putting out the correct amounts?

    (neslihan, Uruguay)

  10. Yeah I will test the PSU before I send the card back. I agree that just because it is from a deceant company dosen't mean it can't be defective.
The volts in the bios look good but I will put another one in it just to be sure.
