Building a new system soon, having second thoughts regarding monitor. ( 2 Views )
-
So I'm slapping together a new system, I have a budget of $3000 but seem to be able to keep it just below $2500 without losing much of anything, so that part is taken care of.
The monitor I was planning on buying is the ever-present Dell 2005FPW. I am currently using a Sony Trinitron CPD-G420S 19" CRT, which while three years old, blows most modern 19" CRTs I see out of the water. It can do 1600x1200 @ 85hz and looks sharp while doing it.
I worry that perhaps the 2005FPW isn't enough of an upgrade to warrant paying nearly $500 for it. Is there anyone here who has switched from a _quality_ CRT to the 2005FPW or a similar panel? i'm curious to hear your input.

If I were you, I'd personally get the 2001FP over the 2005FPW, but that's just me.

well, If i were you (and i'm not) I would look at the 2405fpw if you NEED to have an lcd, but, if a huge crt wouldnt bother you, an fw900 (24 widescreen) might be up your alley (at about $325 too). Mine is doing 1920x1200 (native) at 85hz

Wow.. CRT prices on eBay are amazing. It's almost tempting to get one of the FW900/FW9012s... I'll have to think about it I guess. Maybe I ought to go look at some LCDs similar to the 2005FPW at a local store... though they are inevitably hooked up to analog and at non-native res.

http://www.azatek.com/details.asp?iid=786 merry x-mas. Instead of going with the used fw-900s on ebay, here is a great deal on a refrubished unit, certified by HP. Grade -A condition. refurbished >> used. This is a steal considering the refurbs of this monitor typically go for $1,000

If you're used to running your PC at 1600x1200, the fact that you can't run it at that resolution with the Dell 2005FPW will drive you absolutely nuts. I returned the Gateway 21" widescreen I bought for that exact reason. I recommend either the monitor I have in my sig (which I went to after having a very nice 21" CRT) or the Dell 2001FP as it uses the same panel.
If you need all those HD inputs into the monitor, then you'll need to go with a 24" widescreen display to get at least 1600x1200.

the thing about the 2005fpw is it's 16:10, so vertically it's only a little bigger than a 17". a 21" WS is vertically smaller than a 19" 4:3. So if you're used to a certain resolution and want to go WS, you really need to step up to a 23" or 24".

Hrm didn't notice this thread was still alive. Ended up skipping the monitor for now, I'll get one when I can more easily afford it, so my system specs wont suffer.
If I did buy one it would probably be a 20 or 21" 4:3, unless I ran into a very, very good deal on a 24"
