hooking up TV that has DVI port to a 7800GT... need help ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. i have a 32" Advent widescreen flatscreen TV (not flatpanel) and im trying to hook it up to my computer...

    my PC specs:

    ASUS A8N SLI Premium
    Athlon64 X2 4200+
    eVGA 7800GT 256mb
    2x1Gb OCZ GOLD DDR500
    WD Caviar 250Gb HD (SATA)

the monitor has a DVI port on the back. I spent 70 dollars on a cable that plugs directly into the DVI port on the back of the TV and then right into the DVI port on the 7800GT... but i get no video..(and yes, there is a DVI channel, but still no video)

whats my problem? is there a separate box i have to buy that goes between the TV and computer???

  2. just a hunch, but since the 7800s have 2 DVI outputs, did you try the second one? If not, give it a quick try, otherwise make sure your display properties are set to a resolution that your TV supports before hooking it up, otherwise the scan frequency maybe going out of range, hope this helps.......................

  4. Are you sure your refresh rates are compatible with the TV?

  5. Make sure you set the resolution to something lower than what your TV is before you hook it up to it... i.e. plug in a monitor first, change the resolution to something low like 800x600, then plug it in to your tv. If you have the resolution set too high, you will not get a visual, which seems to be your problem. Hope that helps :)

  6. Check which DVI it is, theres a few sets out there, and make sure the TV isnt too pickey about cables. Ad like he said, tone down your resolution and refresh rate (if set high) and see what the TV shows. Also, check in the TV's user guide for information on its DVI port.

  7. ok got it working!!! I wasnt letting it kick-in long enough.... it took like almost 2 minutes to show video onscreen.... now my problem is that the desktop is bigger than my screen and i cant see the start bar or X-out of windows and stuff.

    any suggestions?

Either updated video drivers that have more TV options, or download powerstrip. It can be time-consuming getting a tv's timings right, and each tv's timings can vary quite a bit, meaning there is no "one size fits all" solution in that regard. Maybe google your model TV and see what you find.
