Cool'n'Quiet locks up my computer ( 4 Views )

no kitty!
  1. so i finally got around to downloading AMD's Cool'n'Quiet drivers. i also enabled it, as well as q-fan control, in the BIOS (version 1008) of my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe.

i also downloaded AMD's PowerNow! Dashboard to monitor my cpu. regardless of what i do, the frequency stays at 1000 MHz (as opposed to the usual 2200 MHz for my AMD 64 3500 Venice). additionally, the cpu voltage remains at 1.0750v (as opposed to the usual 1.2750v).

with c'n'q on i can surf, launch folders and Word, etc. however, when i launch more demanding programs such as photoshop or after effects my computer locks up.

i read online that people do not recommend using c'n'q because all it does is underclock the cpu. in my experience, i have to agree. i also saw that this might be a conflict with xp sp2, which i also have. does anyone know of a hotfix for this?

also, why does the powernow dashboard never show a change in the cpu's frequency?

and why does my computer keep locking up?

i really enjoy having a much quieter pc, but not at the cost of underclocking my cpu by almost 50%.

thanks in advance for your help.

  2. I'd disable it personally, as I've read nothing but problems about it. The only hotfixes I know of are to support X2's and what not. Check in your mb settings to see if you have direct control over your cpu fan, and if so, turn it down a bit to make the thing quieter, just watch your temps to make sure they don't go insane.

  3. Go to your control panel, and click on Power Options. Set the profile to Portable/Laptop. I find when I boot into Windows with Home/Office selected, the CPU stays underclocked. Once you switch to Laptop and apply, you can change back to Home/Office to stay at full clock speed but you'll run into the same problems when you reboot. I just leave it on Power/Laptop.

    I hope this helps.

  4. Its supposed to be set to "Minimal Power Management" in the power options. Ive found (as its been said 9000 times) that CnQ does really funky things, especially when overclocking. I just leave it off personally, its not worth trying to figure out why imo.

  5. i don't overclock, if that makes any difference.

    c'n'q is a pain.

  6. I've never had a single problem with it on numerous systems and configurations. From VIA to Nforce 3/4 boards. However, if you intend to overclock, disable it.
