TO Duel..or not to Duel that is the question ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. TO Dual..or not to Duel that is the question

I'm not going to pretend that I'm completly understanding dual processers. I start reading and then zonk out with all the technical info :D

My question is though if I DONT do a lot of multitasking, would it be wiser for me to just get a really high clocked single processor or get a duel and possibly future games takening advantage (yes mostly a gaming machine. When I do work, my multitasking is like 3 programs open)

  2. depends on how long you plan on keeping this rig :D

    2 weeks

    j/k

long long time. I need to get a new PCIe Motherboard for my videocard (to make computer 3) but I'm trying to decide on processor.

  4. I say go with single core, and overclock it. If dual cores ever (and it is dual, they aren't fighting there are two of them) show the huge performance jumps in gaming that are possible, you can always upgrade to a dual core later on.

  5. if you're gonna keep it for a long time (like.. >1-2 years), an oc'ed dual core would probably be best.

Agreed. BTW, Quake 4 really takes advantage of dual core, FEAR and COD2 both utilize dual core, but not as well as Q4. I have noticed this from my own dual core proc and imagine there is only more of this to come.

  7. Uh i think a single core would last around 1-2 yrs and a dual core a little longer... but I dont really think any game right now takes advantage of dual core...

Games nowadays are all video hogs.

    (tarık, Greece)

  8. What kind of question is that? Of course you should get a dual-core. Unless your budget is restraining you...

hmmmm.... when I run quake 4 and have task manager or speedfan open on my secondary monitor, it shows both cores being fully utilized. not as well on the other games I mentioned, but all three are most certainly dual core optimized. and actually, on my opteron 146 @ 2.7ghz, I still saw some stuttering and such when scripted sequences occured, when I play on my x2 3800, its no longer present, which is a pretty big deal since its clocked so much lower (currently 2.3ghz).

well...yes and no. Like I said I don't TOTALLY understand dual cores, but it seems like it benefits people who do a lot more multitasking.

    And DVD Shrink/other multimedia apps.

  12. Oh, the forn of two you need is "dual"; "duel" refers to an old style pistol duel or otherwise, not "two". =) Have a nice day. And, yes, go dual core.

i think it was intentional, looking at the spelling in the post itself :D

i do have to ask the obvious: what else is running?

  15. typically... when i game, i have speedfan open on my secondary monitor to see temps, etc... just makes me feel better, kind of obsessed :) occassionally i will leave msn messenger open if i'm waiting to talk to someone.... if cs:source is the game of the hour, winamp may be open.

Yeap :) I actually messed up the first time and it was supposed to be in the Thread heading (like me trying to decide is a duel in my head)

I don't think that Quake 4 does. Or any game other than Age of Empires III does for that matter. Do you have a link to any proof of this?

i can voch for him that Q4 DOES use both cores i have do the same thing and bothcores are being used with 90 to 100 % usage on both

    SHO NUFF!

Yep, I guess that's why it runs so damn well on my box. At last, something that uses both those monster CPU's of mine.

yea i have it 100% maxed out on my rig MS TSAA on too and its smooth all the time

now im not much of bench mark monkey so if some one wants to bench Q4 with 1 core vs. 2 cores id love to see it
