Your thoughts of DOD: Source ( 2 Views )

I got to play dod:s for about 30 mins today, and I was impressed with everything. The only thing that got to me was the graphical draw it had, took my x850xt to its max. Would you recommed anything different on my system? I had it at 1680x1050, with all setting turned mid-high.

Make sure HDR is off, make sure you're using the Catalyst 5.9s (or the so-recently-released-the-front-page-doesn't-mention-them Omega 2.6.71), and toggle some of those options a bit lower. For example, do you really need high texture quality in an online game?

what is HDR?

High dynamic range lighting. That should yield a huge boost, like 25 to 30%. I can play with that on at high res with a GTX, so I'm sure with that off your card can breeze throught the game without lowering textures or anything. HDR is the oooh and ahhh feature if you want to try and tweak other things. I'm sure in HL2 you are used to 4xAA and tons of aniso with your card, try less. Once you start tweaking textures and stuff, I don't know if you wouldn't just shut it off after checking it out for a bit.
If you want to know what you are looking at, just look at the light and how it changes when you go running through a doorway and get into the outside. It shows a more realistic effect right there, with the light coming through the doorway, and as you sprint off into the outside.

I thought only the 68's and 78's had HDR capabilities. Am I missing something?

What fps is everyone getting on average?
With my system, at the following settings: I got 35-45 on average. I only played the game for like 10 min because I could barely find a server that wasnt full and the servers were incredibly laggy!! I tried these settings at first because thats what I run CS:S at. I guess this game is alot more graphics intensive because CS:S runs buttery smooth at those settings. I WANT A GTX!!! :( Looks like Im going to have to run the detected settings 2x AA / 4x AF All HIGH
1280x1024
4x AA
8x AF
High Settings
HDR FULL

can anyone post something like this with a superior system than me? all you do is start your own listen server, anzio, spawn as allies and snap a pic with cl_showfps set to 1.
i know its just sooo helpful to hear someone say 'i get 60-70fps at highest detail!', but itd be nice to be able to compare with a common bench. right now i get terrible FPS compared to what i get in CS:S. ive been forced to run at 1024x768 medium detail, which is absurd for what my rig should be able to handle.

athlon xp @ 2.4ghz

The game is all i hoped for and more. It's a semi-realistic wwii shooter that simply brings me one thing: fun!
I like DoD and once you accept that DoD:S is NOT DoD, then it's simply a great game. For the price of $20 (if you have to buy it now) or included in Silver HL2 (as i did), it's hard to beat.
Graphics are stunning and I can play smoothly at 1280x1024 with 4xAA,16xAF and full HDR (getting around 60-70fps).
BTW, i just saw your comment above about 40FPS in Anzio. It's the only map in the game that actually gives me lower frames. I hover around 50-55FPS with the below settings in Anzio. In your case, I'm very sure your Athlon XP is holding you back. Once you switch to a AMD64, you'll get similiar frames as i do (well, maybe 3-5 less since my videocard is a tad bit better, but not too much difference).
My system (if any is interested):
AMD64 3200+ oc to 2.4GHZ on
DFI NF4 Ultra-d (FSB 240)
1GB PQI Mem 1:1 divider
X850XT stock speeds with 5.9 Catalyst
Audigy ZS
Some ppl report frame rate probs with nVidia cards but I've also seen ppl with 6600GT having good frame rates, so i guess it depends on the nVidia driver.

My poor 9800XT started to overheat shortly after I started the map. Artifacts all over the place; it's snowing in Anzio!!! Oh well, my X800XL should be here tomorrow, then all will be right with the world.

Also, just as a side note: You're stressing your CPU very much by running a Server in the background and then entering the game. Essentially, your CPU has to calculate both ends and it's no wonder your FPS go downhill with an AthlonXP in that case. On a low ping server that is NOT local, your frames should be better.

I run at 1920x1200 on my 6800 go ultra, high res, no HDR with no AA/AF. Game runs and looks fine for me.
The gameplay is what I expected, although I suck with the assault class SMGs. I find it easier just to run up and knife guys as a scout or whatever the fast class is. Hopefully they'll add a few more wide open maps to vay the gameplay a bit.

Well it's downloading now, and I can't wait to get playing. I got the entire Valve package for $10 too. :D Go ATI Coupons!

thats a nice explanation, and sounds logical, but its just not true.
its not a dedicated server. its a listen server. no game, including CS:S has ever docked FPS for me running my own listen server. in fact i get better framerates when im by myself than when im joining anothers server. I join an internet game its even worse.
oh 5.9 cats btw.

I get HL2.exe error and crash when I run a listen server. But on a mp game I run mega maxed, and it is fine. *shrug*
