Passing useless variables? ( 6 Views )
-
I'm trying to make my php site a bit more search engine friendly, and I was wondering if there was any harm in passing useless variables in the URL query string for the benefit of search engines like Google, which like to see search terms appear in the URL. For instance, for most pages I simply pass the ID variable to display a certain record, but what if I passed the id variable along with, say, the name of a band whose record I was reviewing? Is there any conceivable harm in this? Am I wrong in believing this would benefit my google ranking?

I don't see any harm in doing it as long as you don't give it the same name as a variable you use. As for the Google ranking, I'm not sure, you would have to ask in that forum.

Google doesn't use meta tags in any way that I've seen, so that would be a waste of space and effort.
