can i use this old rig to practice OC'ing? ( 3 Views )
-
my wifes cousin dropped this off at my house today:
dank ass case w/ an old EP8K7A mobo, amd athlon 1700 processor, with 512mb of ram (which directly made it's way into my current rig). i mentioned to him earlier in the week how i'm building a pc and today he calls and says...."i've got this "case" with nothing in it...blah blah blah...do you want it?"
to make a long story short he shows up, i break the thing open to find it almost ready for use with the above components remaining in the case. he had it built at a pc shop a few years back.
anyhow, i put a stick of 256 back in it and all i need to do is install a drive of some sort a vid card and a hard drive. now i've got a few questions:
when i order my new rig i will be ordering an OEM version of WinXP. Will i be able to install windows from this one package on more than one pc? if i do end up getting this rig off the ground will it be possible to OC it? i want to practice before i try it on my main gaming rig. thanks for any input.

1.yes. Just don't register your cd key as a precautionary measure and you should be fine.
2.the EP8K7A has vcore and fsb adjustment in the bios, as well as jumpers, if I'm not mistaken. Don't know about memory timings. I think it will OC decently.
Athlons can put up with a lot of ****, so don't feel timid when practicing your OC. If you read that someone did something with a rig similar to yours, don't hesitate to try it. :)

And if it happens to be one of the "golden" 1700's , that thing should oc like crazy (2.4-2.5ghz) motherboard and ram allowing, of course.
LOL...my sisters brothers cousins uncle :p

honestly there is no reason to practice ocing because everything oc's differently...best thing to do is read an oc guide for whatever cpu and mobo your working with

Not legally.
Multiple threads on same/similar topic is generally tacky, here's the main one.

And as you'll notice Cell says basically the same thing I did...overclocking's less something you practice than something you just do. A bit of research on your hardware first is good. But practicing on an entirely different rig will only give you limited help on a different one. Hit it anyway, you'll get a good spin on the basics, and if they're similar then maybe you'll learn a thing or two that'll be useful later.

If nothing else, you can oc it a little, and make it a Folding@Home box

uhhh, i posted an OC specific topic in the OC forums. what's tacky about that???...my thread in general hardware although including similar info as this one was not an OC specific post. thanks for your help though.

so if i dont register it then i can use it on multiple systems? i was thinking that it registered automatically when you installed...the OEM version anyway....hmmm now i'm really confused.

No, I belive his line of thought is to install it temporarily on the system to give you "toying around time" and not register it untill you un-install it, and install it in your new rig permanantly. Pay for one key = unstall it on one rig.
But then you found this out in your other thread:
OEM Windows XP

I think "tacky" was in referrence to trying to circumvent MS's copy protection.
Don't you have another box running that you could uninstall xp from and re-register? (If you're upgrading from win98.....welcome to the 21st century :D XP is sooo much better.)

Tacky was in reference to starting several threads on the same topic.
Illegal was in reference to circumventing MS's copy protection.
OEM copies are tied to the motherboard they're initially installed with. You'd need a full/retail copy if you want to transfer it without violating the license agreement.

if you people have a problem with my multiple threads/posts i'll accept suggestions as to how i could have done things better. everyone of the threads that i started were specific in nature therefore placed in the proper forum. i may be new to computer building and overclocking but i'm not new to forum etiquette. peace.

Suggestion: try to keep crossposting to a minimum. Multiple questions should generally be consolidated into one thread rather than having one post per question in seperate subforums. If it's something completely unrelated that's one thing, but yours weren't, they were all about this new boxen you acquired and what to do with it. Pick the spot that best applies and post there, cuts down on confusion all around and makes sure everyone is up to speed.
BTW if you're in high school / college, check if your institution participates in the MSDN Academic Alliance program. You might be able to get that copy of XP for free.

People with wives can't be in college?
I mention high school because a good number participate in MSDNAA. Just on the off chance that anyone bothers to actually search, it might apply to someone besides the OP. :D
