Is there a way to tell if a card has ever been used? ( 3 Views )

1. Best buy has this open box ati 9800 pro for sale but i wanted to know
   if its been used or anything. they just told me that some customer opend it
   
   so is there any signs that will be present if its been used?

4. Is this open box card significantly reduced in price? If not, why not wait for a sealed one.
   
   Also, if the driver disk comes in one of those annoying little paper envelopes with the clear window on them, you should easily be able to see if it's been opened.

   This is the only reliable indicator. Other indicators usually border on the edge of paranoia.
   
   Be aware that even with a new card there are always some marks on those connectors, so make some comparisons with other (new and used) cards, so that you know what kind of marks to look for.

6. Check for scratches on the metal bracket to see if it's been secured (used) on another rig.
   
   The scratches from the connectors might be from testing the cards at the factory.

7. If the customer just opened it, it may have been zapped by static electricity. Never had a problem with static myself but I might only buy it if there were a lot of money to be saved.
   
   I bought a burner years ago from Future Shop (now owned by Best Buy) when they were actually worth money. I had also bought a monitor and other stuff at the same time. I didn't notice that they slipped me a burner in a box that had already been opened (seal broke). It was annoying since we live 130KM from the store. I used it then took it back a couple weeks later and got a sealed one. Ironically, the sealed one was defective out of the box so again, another trip back to the city. hah!
