Bfg 6800u Oc ( 4 Views )
-
Hello all, I just pre-ordered a BFG 6800U OC and I have a few questions for you all. anyways im currently using a Antec Truepower 380W and the requirements for the 6800U OC is a 480W psu. Is this because it has a 425mhz core? I think it was the Asus that I saw and they also had a 425mhz core too and ask for a 350W psu. Can anyone tell me why you need a 480W PSU with the 6800U OC.
Thank you (sorry if this has been asked before)

I'm curious as well, though in a slightly different position.
I am buying the same card, have 2 optical drives, and 3 hard drives, but do have a 480 watt psu. Been kind of kicking myself for not getting a step up, but i don't anticipate any problems. Any confirmations?

well heres my answer. From what ive read the regular 6800 ultra takes up up to 150 watts of power. Now keep in mind in most cases even though you have a 380 watt powersupply as the tempurature increases the average wattage that power supply puts out goes down. i think at 40 degree's c your probably getting 300 of the 380 watts. maybe a bit more, youll have to check the specs on the PSU> anyway 1 videocard taking 150 of the 300 watts available leaves you with 150 watts for the rest of your system. now add 2 10,000 rpm raptors, dvd burner/cdrw, cold cathode lights, CPU, 10 fans, etc and your cutting ing very close. if you overclock your BFG like i did (472/1220) then im sure it takes even more power. I would suggest putting the 100 bucks out to buy a decent psu with lots of power. i have a 520 watt vantec stealth (95 bucks www.newegg.com )
there is a possibility that your 380 watt psu will run the card fine, but if it doesnt dont go calling BFG and say you didnt see 480 w required cause they told you so...

ah thanks, well im either gonna go with the Antec 480W NeoPower or Truepower, since their both $179 I don't know which one to go with. anyone help me decided?
Oh and btw, these are my specs and im not planning on OC'ing the 6800U
-2.4c @ 3.5c
-512mb PC3500 DDR RAM
-Abit IS7
-Maxtor 7,200 RPM 40G HDD
-No optical devices (I switch it up with my other comp)
-Antec Truepower 380W
(duygu, Niue)
I've also got a BFG 6800 Ultra on order, and atm I'm using a 430W power supply that I plan to upgrade to something 500W or higher, partially from the video card, and partially due to the fact that I need to add some more drives to the box.
I'm running my system in an older Tornado-1000 case that has 4 fans going in it as well, so ventilation is good and will help me OC the card a little maybe, if not, I'll live. ;)
You cant really go wrong with getting a bigger power supply, just make sure its a quality one and not some no-name brand. Check the Power Supplies forum here for some better info.

but does anyone know the reason why the 6800U OC would need a 480W psu compared to the other 6800U's

Hmmm you might be able to get away with it running those specs.....ie not upgrading your PSU....

would anything "bad" happen if I do try to run the card?

Not exactly. If the card doesn't get enough power, it just won't work correctly, I don't believe it would cause any physical damage to the card. However, over-volting or giving the card too much power will help ruin the card.

ah okay, well can anyone else answer my last question, the antec truepower and neopower 480W are same price, which would be better?
