Could a missing cpu pin cause the motherboard to die? ( 1 Views )

Okay, I read on a site that you could fix a missing pin on the p4 northwood processors by sticking a needle tip in the socket where the old pin (now missing) normally would have gone. Well, since American Express is covering the processor since it's technically out of warranty now, I figured I would try to get this working.
I cut the tip of a pin off with wire cutters (a very small piece in length) and put it in the appropriate socket. Well, I then place the processor in it, and sure enough.. it doesn't POST. However, it did start beeping. It was a VERY long loud beep, and continued to loop. The beeps lasted about 3-4 seconds each, and then would go silent for about 1-2 seconds, and then repeat.
I'm wondering if I could have damaged my motherboard in any way. I mean, everything powers on just fine, fans are all turning, it was BEEPING, which I assume means that the BIOS was like "Shit man, your cpu isn't in the socket right or there is cpu damage!" I'm just wondering if there's a possibility that I could have damaged the mobo.
Anyway, I ordered a p4 2.8E Prescott off newegg for $167 and $21 for overnight shipping since I'm leaving for college in the next few days and it's crucial I get this thing. The thing is, American Express is going to refund me $280, which was the cost of the processor originally, so I actually made money (Not like it was my goal to do that, that's just how it turned out).
So yeah... does it sound like I could have damaged my mobo or not? I am just asking because I want to reassure myself that when I get my processor tomorrow (picking it up at a fedex branch) it will work.
BTW -- Prescott's DO work with IC7-G's right?

I thought that the long beeps were for memory problems? You could take out the memory and see how it beeps to confirm what Im saying.
If you think its the CPU - just take it out and see if it beeps the same way.
How did u break the pin anyway?

I didn't break the pin. It just fell off. I'm guessing it was lose from the beginning and removing my Zalman did the rest of the job. I know it's not the memory. I'm not going to bother even trying since the computer worked fine until I took the processor out :)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's more than likely that the mobo saw the mobo, had a hissy fit, and that's about it. I mean, turn on your mobo without a proc and I bet it'll beep like mad.

Your motherboard is probably just fine. Just get you a new cpu unless your ready for a new system anyway.

While your waiting for a new cpu you could find out what the beep codes for your motherboard are.

I did. The beep codes I experienced were for a CPU that was mounted incorrectly or for a CPU that was damaged.
